For 21 years, the “Best Animated Film” category has existed at the Oscars – which, in turn, has been held for 94 years. However, some statuettes have been awarded to the film genre since 1939, when “Snow White and the 7 dwarfs” received honorary recognition and opened the doors for other cartoons to conquer different categories. From then on, the most renowned cinema academy realized that animations deserved a dispute of their own.
All of the nominated productions bring together fun and reflection for children and sensitivity for adults. The competition, however, was won by Disney and Pixar studios 18 out of 21 times. 1. Pinocchio (2023 winner)
Produced by Netflix, the film was recorded for 15 years in a “stop-motion” style, that is, changing the characters – in the form of puppets, frame per frame. The adaptation of the story was the responsibility of Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, the name behind “Puss in Boots”, “The Shape of Water”, “Pan’s Labyrinth”, “The Hobbit” and “Kung Fu Panda”. First movie by Pixar to feature a black protagonist, the feature is fun for children and a lesson in life for older people. Joe is a music teacher whose life hasn’t turned out exactly as he had hoped. His true passion is jazz; in it, are all his talent and dedication. However, her dream of performing in a newly won show is cut short after an accident. Now, in another realm, he needs to help someone find their passion, and he soon discovers what it means to have a soul.

3. Wall-E (2009 winner)

In a distant future, and not so unrealistic, humanity abandons the Earth because it was covered with garbage and without nature. However, Wall-E, a garbage collector robot, was left to clean up the mess. One day, a more technological robot, called Eva, goes to the planet on a mission to find something that proves that human life can inhabit it again. From then on, the two go into space and live a unique adventure. The animation addresses topics such as preservation environment, health, technology and society.

4. Spirited Away (2003 winner)

Studio Ghibli film, is one of the only from the list of all non-Disney and/or Pixar winners. 10-year-old Chihiro moves with her parents to a new house in the countryside of Japan. However, after taking a turn on a shortcut, the family discovers an amusement park with a stall containing a variety of foods. Without anyone seeing, the girl’s parents eat food and turn into pigs. She, who felt something was wrong, tries to help her parents. Chihiro then enters a supernatural realm and encounters a host of characters in a new adventure.

5. Shrek (2002 winner)

The first film to win the best animation category is one of the darlings to this day. Shrek, which has a sequel and spinoffstells the story of a green ogre whose peace in the swamp is threatened by enchanted creatures and, to get back to routine, he needs to rescue a beautiful princess. However, what he still doesn’t know is that when he meets Fiona, the routine of his life will change forever.
