5 treatment alternatives for varicose veins

There are several treatment options that allow for a much faster recovery.

This Monday (27), Ana Maria Braga told on social networks that she was absent from the program “Mais Você” this morning because she underwent surgery for varicose veins. This situation ended up generating a lot of curiosity in the public, because, in the old days, when someone mentioned the treatment of varicose veins, they immediately imagined a long recovery period, with the need for hospitalization for surgery and prolonged rest.

However, there was a real revolution in the varicose veins treatments. There are even new procedures that make it possible to treat patients in the offices, without the need for hospitalization. It is increasingly common to undergo procedures without “downtime” (with quick or no recovery), to keep the patient active during the process.

“The surgery of varicose veins was replaced by an elaborate treatment plan and a staged treatment (done in stages), within the vascular office”, explains vascular surgeon Dr. Aline Lamaita, member of the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery.

Room equipped for complete evaluation

The concept arose from Flebosuite, a room equipped for complete vascular evaluation: with augmented reality equipment, doppler ultrasound, transdermal laser, skin cooler, sclerotherapy material and endovenous laser equipment, in addition to adequate photographic documentation.

“In this new reality, the patient undergoes a thorough evaluation, from the consultation, through the physical examination, complementary exams and, thus, a phlebogram is drawn, a drawing elaborated with details of the patient’s entire venous system”, says the doctor .

From this phlebogram, a plan is drawn up, with the combination of one or several combined procedures, with the objective of improve circulation and the aesthetic appearance of the legs. “After all, different veins ask for different treatments, and this will determine what will make up your individualized treatment plan”, he concludes.

types of procedures

Find out which procedures are part of this treatment plan, according to Dr. Aline Lamaita:

1. Saphenous vein thermoablation

Minimally invasive treatment of the saphenous vein, in which an optical fiber is introduced into the vein without the need for cuts. The vein is then treated from the inside, being absorbed by the body itself. “Today this is considered the gold standard, that is, the best treatment for the saphenous vein. No need for rest, just 2 to 4 days without physical activity”, he emphasizes.

2. Dense foam

Injection of a product in the form of a mousse into larger caliber veins, replacing microsurgery. No need for rest.

3. ClaCs (Cryolaser + cryosclerotherapy)

This is another very simple procedure. “The technique devised by Professor Doctor Kasuo Miyake combines transdermal laser with sclerotherapy (glucose injections), an adequate treatment for less caliber and superficial veins in the skin. It can also be used for spider veins (the famous telangiectasias)”, says the doctor. No need for rest, just refrain from sunbathing for a period of 10 days after each session.

4. ATTA

Technique used for the treatment of varicose veins through puncture and passage of optical fiber, without cuts, without rest.

5. Clafs

Association of transdermal laser with foam, which can be performed in larger and more superficial veins. It also does not need rest.

Choice of treatment type

According to the doctor, a treatment plan will consist of one or some of the procedures proposed above. “The decision for which technique or techniques to use will be made by the characteristics of the veins, but most importantly: the treatments are minimally invasive, practically without rest and are performed in the office, without the need for hospitalization”, she concludes.
