Town and church holidays
On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the forty Martyrs of Sebaste – Christian soldiers who were killed. They were born in Cappadocia and served in the Roman army.
The commander demanded that the martyrs sacrifice to the pagan gods and, receiving a refusal, subjected them to torture. They stood on the frozen lake all night. By morning, only one of the soldiers could not stand it and ran to the hot bath. His place among the martyrs was taken by the Roman Christian Aglaius.
Our ancestors considered this day one of the biggest holidays of the year – the day of the second meeting of spring. The first is for Candlemas, the third is expected for the Annunciation. Farmers say that “with the Magpie day and night are measured, winter ends, spring begins.”
Larks are the harbingers of spring. It is also believed that 40 different birds fly to the Magpies from warm regions. But spring is not yet true – morning frosts persist.
People call this day Lark or Magpie Day.
Traditions and rituals
To protect themselves from frost, the housewives baked 40 balls from rye or oatmeal – “holy magpies, golden koloban”, which were thrown out the window one at a time for 40 days .
On March 22, the women baked 40 cookies in the form of birds from the dough in advance and gave them to the children, saying: “Larks fly, sit on the children’s heads.”
What Not to Do
Any physical labor and sewing, as well as housework, are prohibited.
What can be done
The severity of Great Lent is somewhat weakened on March 22 – on this day you can eat food with vegetable oil and drink alcohol.
Signs
- If the matinees from this day continue – be a hot summer.
