The decision comes after the swimmer said she was not allowed to enter one of the city’s pools without a chest cover in December 2022.
Women in Berlin were allowed to swim topless in the city’s public pools. The measure was introduced this week as a step toward gender equality, according to CNN.
It is understood that the Berlin authorities made the decision after the swimmer said that in December 2022 he was not allowed to enter one of the city’s pools without covering his chest. The woman filed a complaint with the Ombudsman’s Office.
So, the authorities agreed that he was a victim of discrimination.
“As a result of the successful handling of the discrimination complaint, Berlin baths will apply their accommodation and bathing rules in a gender-equal manner in the future,” the statement said.
The head of the Office of the Ombudsman, Dr. Doris Liebscher, also welcomed the move.
“The Ombudsman fully welcomes the bathhouses’ decision because it creates equal rights for all Berliners, whether male, female or non-binary, and also creates legal certainty for bathhouse staff,” he said.
It should be noted that Keon West, a professor of social psychology at Goldsmiths University London, has studied attitudes towards nudity in various European countries and beyond.
“Most people understand that the Germans are more relaxed about nudity than the British or the Americans,” he says.
By the way, the German passion for nudity dates back to the last century. In 1920, the first nudist beach was opened there.
It will be remembered that in 2013 in New York, women were officially allowed to walk the streets bare-chested.
