5 fun facts about the saint

On March 15th, the “Day of São Longuinho” is celebrated. Known for being a man who lived during the first century and who was present at the crucifixion of Christ, he is highly acclaimed by the faithful who lose objects and need to recover them. “São Longuinho, São Longuinho, if you help me find (name of the item) I’ll give you three hops”.

São Longuinho is one of the popular saints in many countries of the East and West and is present in several biblical passages related to the Passion of Christ. 1. Origin from the name São Longuinho

Although there are no biblical records of Longuinho’s name, several popular beliefs they say that his name was Cassius, and that Longinus was the name of the office he held, holding the spears during martyrdoms. That is, he would have worked as a centurion soldier and would be one of those responsible for piercing Jesus’ body with a spear.

Even though it doesn’t exist historical evidence from the association of São Longuinho with the Roman soldier, the belief to the saint says that: after piercing Jesus with a spear, Longuinho received a jet of blood in his eyes and, at the moment, his vision problem was solved. 3. Connection with lost things

São Longuinho is known for being the saint of the forgotten. However, just like his name, the belief about the three jumps is also unproven. However, there are two popular versions about the origin of the fact. The first says that while I was in roman army, Longuinho lived at parties and, because he was short, he always found lost objects and returned them to their owners. The second explains that São Longuinho had a leg problem and, because of that, people pay homage to him by jumping on one leg.

In the municipality of Guararema, in the city of São Paulo, it is common for a party to be held in honor of the Holy. The celebration, this year, is already in its 21st edition and has processions, masses and various gastronomic attractions.
