The Queen has only disappeared twice at the Opening of Parliament since ascending the throne in 1952 – in 1959 and 1963 when she was pregnant with Princes Andrew and Prince Edward respectively.
Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain did not attend the opening of Parliament on Tuesday 10 May. CNN writes about it, citing a statement from Buckingham Palace.
It was noted that the cause was mobility problems.
The Queen continued to experience occasional mobility issues and, after consulting with her doctors, reluctantly decided that she would not attend the State Opening of Parliament.
The Palace also added that at Her Majesty’s request and with the consent of the relevant authorities, the Prince of Wales would read the Queen’s speech. The Duke of Cambridge was also present.
As you know, the Queen’s speech, written by the government, was a significant event on both the royal and political calendars. It is one of the most important symbolic duties of the monarch and the center of the Opening ceremony of the State Parliament, which is a major constitutional duty and cannot be performed without the monarch.
In addition, the Queen has been absent from the Opening of Parliament only twice since ascending the throne in 1952 – in 1959 and 1963, when she was pregnant with Princes Andrew and Prince Edward, respectively. Then the speech was read by the Lord Chancellor.
We will remind, Buckingham Palace previously opened a unique promotion on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth II’s platinum anniversary, to be held this year.
Queen Elizabeth II will no longer be able to attend parties at Buckingham Palace
