Learn first aid attitudes that can help save your pet’s life
Just like humans, pets are also subject to accidents – whether outside or indoors. Some cases, including, may endanger the pet’s life. Therefore, with the help of veterinary doctors, we have listed some first aid tips. Check out!
How to act in cases of hit-and-run?
In cases of being run over, first aid measures with dogs and cats are similar to those adopted with humans. “In case of accidents, especially car accidents, animals should not be removed without professional and specific care”, explains Dr. Alexandre Pasternak, veterinarian and member of the Brazilian Society of Veterinary Dermatology.
Still according to him, if this is not possible, first, the extent of the injuries must be evaluated, if the animal is breathing and if there is bleeding. After that, “the airways must be gently released and the pet run over on a wooden board as soon as possible, taking it to the necessary medical care”, he teaches.
Fall from high places
For guardians who have cats, for safety reasons, it is ideal that they have bars or screens in apartments or in houses with high windows. Cats are very curious and love to climb windows. If there is an accident and the feline falls, you must proceed in the same way as in a hit-and-run.
“Lower falls (up to the 6th floor) can have more serious consequences for cats than falls from higher floors,” explains Dr. Alexandre Pasternak, who adds: “the cat needs to hit himself to land on his feet and reduce internal injuries; which on low floors does not have time to happen”.
According to the veterinarian, another thing that causes a lot of damage to cats that fall from apartment windows is the headwind to the building, which makes the animal hit the wall several times. And there are still serious injuries to cats that try to grab the wall during the fall.
Intoxication and choking
To offer foods unsuitable for pets can cause intoxication or choking. If this happens, the best alternative is to seek immediate help. It is essential to alert on arrival at the veterinary hospital the reason for the emergency.
“Unfortunately, no homemade maneuver helps at this time. We need to avoid any new trauma to the esophagus and stomach, so not forcing vomiting or ingesting any food is paramount for success. What you should do is immediately take it to a veterinary hospital”, warns veterinarian Caroline Mouco Moretti. She points out that no procedure should be done without the instruction of a veterinarian.
Veterinarian Rammana Bello da Silva explains that, in cases of choking, depending on the size of the object, there may not be enough time to wait for emergency care. “It is important that the tutor is able to assess, mainly, the color of the pet’s tongueif it is purple or not and, in this way, remove the object at the time of the event or immediately go to the veterinarian”, he teaches.
