A startup called The Ice Guys fought against plastic straws and created an alternative for them that also keeps drinks cold. The New Atlas writes about it.
The Ice Guys made ice straws. That is, it is a silicone mold that can be filled with water and frozen for 30-45 minutes, and then take a ready-to-eat straw from it.
There are three different sizes of straws for different types of drinks: Classic is 220 mm long with a 5 mm hole. The Cocktail has the same opening width but is only 140mm long, allowing you to drink from shorter cocktail glasses. And the Boba is a thicker version of the Classic with a 12mm wide opening that allows you to swallow bubbles from bubble tea.
But for wider production, the Ice Guys are looking for funding. If all goes according to plan, shipping should begin in May 2023, just in time for the start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.
