Both endoscopic and bariatric gastroplasty promote weight loss, but the procedure and indications are different.
Bariatric surgery is already well known and established to lower the scales of people who are very overweight. This description fits those who have a body mass index, the famous BMI, above 40 or above 35 with comorbidities, that is, problems derived from excess pounds, hypertension, diabetes or cardiovascular diseases, for example.. Most of the time it is performed through videolaparoscopy, when the doctor operates with the help of tweezers and a camera that are inserted into the abdominal region through small holes.
“In these cases, the stomach reduces its capacity from 1500 ml to 50 ml and there is a decrease in the absorption of some nutrients and there is an expectation that the person will lose about 40% of their weight”says the digestive system surgeon Eduardo Greccocoordinator of the Service and Medical Residency of Endoscopy at the Faculdade de Medicina do ABC-São Paulo and a member of the Brazilian Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SOBED).
The procedure lasts between 1 and 2 hours and 2 to 3 days of hospitalization are required. After that it is necessary for the individual to do 30 days of liquid diet. It is also essential that there is follow-up before and after the operation of a multidisciplinary team that has nutritionist, physiotherapist and psychologistand that the use of vitamin complexes so that the patient does not run the risk of suffering from malnutrition.
How is the endoscopic gastroplasty procedure and when is it indicated?
Endoscopic gastroplasty, as the name suggests, is done with a device called an endoscope that is inserted into the body orally, without the need for cuts, and seams the stomach until it reaches about 300 ml. The technique, which was approved by Anvisa at the end of 2016, is indicated for the class that has a BMI above 30 and leads to an average weight loss of 20%..
“The intervention takes about 40 minutes and on the same day the person can go home and needs to go on a liquid diet for 7 to 10 days”, explains Grecco. As with bariatric surgery, it is necessary for a multidisciplinary team to monitor the case and hormonal changes that favor weight loss occur. “This type of intervention is also indicated for those who are very obese and need to lose a little weight to undergo bariatric surgery.”
