With Easter approaching, concern about the effects of chocolate on the skin becomes more present.
The sweetest time of the year is approaching and people are rare who give up good chocolate. At Easter it is normal to exaggerate a little sugar intake and the question that always arises is: “I wonder if chocolate is really the villain of this period and contributes to the increase of acnes?”

ACNE X CHOCOLATE: does this relationship exist?
According to dermatologist Bianca Gastaldia dermatologist, graduated in medicine from the Federal University of Santa Catarina and a member of the Brazilian (SBD) and American Societies of Dermatology (AAD), the delicacy should be consumed in moderation, because it is rich in fat and sugar and can lead to the appearance of of acne in those who already have the problem.
“Consumption of sugar in large amounts raises the levels of insulin, insulin-like growth factors (IGF-1) and their IGF-1R receptors in the sebaceous gland, increasing the production of androgen hormones and hyperkeratinization”explains.
Pollyane Reisinstructor of the Aesthetics course at Faculdade Senac Goiás, nutritionist, specialist in clinical, sports and aesthetic nutrition, explains: “Acne is a chronic, universal, multifactorial, inflammatory or non-inflammatory condition (pathological change), which appears at puberty and may appear in adults, especially in men, due to hormonal changes. Acne is a disease that generates not only discomfort but also a psychological factor crisis, as its clinical manifestation is external (on the skin) and can generate self-esteem problems”.
“A review of several studies on acne and diet concluded the possible causes of acne development: they are not related to the amount of food, but to the quality of it, that is, a diet rich in simple carbohydrates (white flour ) and sugars increase insulin spikes, consequently skin fat production and acne. They observed that people who consume milk and chocolate in excess may have a greater chance of having dermatitis”scores, too.
Dr. Bianca Gastaldi, for her part, claims that a low-sugar diet can improve acne, but only in individuals who have insulin resistance.
“Insulin resistance syndrome happens when the action of this hormone, to transport glucose from the blood to the interior of the cells, is diminished, causing glucose to accumulate in the blood, giving rise to diabetes”explained Tatiana Zaninnutritionist at the Tua Saúde portal.
“This syndrome is a form of pre-diabetes, because if it is not treated and corrected, with food control, weight loss and physical activity, it can turn into type 2 diabetes”he added.
So yes, the relationship exists!
“Based on recent scientific reports, a statement has become increasingly accepted: there is a lower incidence of acne in non-westernized societies, where their diet is more natural, based on fruits, vegetables, healthy oils and white meat. your dietary patterns, there are no processed foods, dairy products, refined sugars and oils”concludes Pollyane Reis.
