It has been confirmed that an inmate in Colorado has been tested for avian flu, the first known case in the United States

An unknown man tested positive for H5N1 influenza at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Confirmed on Thursday. A highly contagious strain of bird flu can be fatal in humans, but health officials say men are virtually asymptomatic and take Tamiflu to combat symptoms of fatigue.

The inmate, described as over 40, was working on a commercial farm in Montrose County as part of a pre-employment program when the test was positive. Health officials referred to “a nose sample” in the man and said a repeated test on the individual was negative for the flu. The affected herd was euthanized.

“Scientists believe the risk to humans is low because the H5 influenza virus is transmitted between wild birds and birds,” the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said in a statement. “They don’t usually infect people and they don’t pass through every person. There are currently no known cases of the H5 influenza virus spreading to humans. There are no other confirmed human cases in Colorado or the United States so far.”
