Speaking about the group Warsaw, we are talking about a group that is unique in its style on stage. underground Lima not only because of her characteristic sound; but because of the excellent quality of his work and his lyrics, which say a lot in lines, usually short. Their longest song is just over five minutes long, but it’s a journey for trained ears only.

The band is cultivating a style that runs through EBM, industrial rock, darkwave, punk and kraut rock to try and give some co-ordinates. Made Dante Gonzalez (synthesizers), Fernando Pinzas (synthesizers) and Sheri Corleone (guitar, voice), in October this year they presented their second album, Design and Destroy.

RPP news talked to Warsaw about this recent album, which represents a step forward in the evolution of his sound. But beware, if you are one of those people who touches the water before diving in, this album is not for your ears.

Warsaw: 10 years on the way

2019 has been a pivotal year for Warsaw: your song they want bloodfrom his first album Nonhuman resourcesbecame part of the soundtrack for the series creepyproduced by the chain HBO. It was the first Peruvian group to reach this television network and its theme became known throughout the continent.

Although this was a milestone for them, since 2012 the group has been making its way into the national underground circle.

Ferdinand: “The first connection to create music was with Dante. At some point, through a mutual friend, I was looking for him, because I wanted him to explain to me how to use the synthesizer (…) Dante has already been from that time. I’m talking about 2011, 2012. At first, the two of us started playing, rehearsing, we had ideas for songs, some lyrics. We wanted to do a different style, a mix of synths with something punk, minimalist, more aggressive.”

Dante: “The first song we recorded was just a cover of a tribute to the Ramones. We didn’t have a vocalist at the time. was not done in Lima either.(…) Tribute came to ramones, it was the first song we recorded with Sheri (…) and it worked and so we decided to try our own songs and here we are.”

Sheri: “This is a very interesting version Ramones in the electronic version. I love it”.

Needless to say, it was during these first meetings of the trio that the question of the group’s name arose. and although Warsaw may refer to Joy Division, they claim that the legendary Mancunian band had almost nothing to do with their election.

Dante: “Warsaw means something distant, something cold. (We chose the name) mainly for aesthetics and for the word itself, not so much for Joy Division”.

Ferdinand: “It sounded good, we shuffled a few names as a group. And I said to Sheri, “What about Warsaw’. It sounded good, the word has a pretty strong phonetics.”

Sheri: “And Banana Split, it really had nothing to do with anything. It didn’t work (laughs).”

Already christened with this name, in 2014 their first album will be released, Nonhuman resources, under the Buh Records label. The album praised the band’s main characteristic: the use of analog synthesizers, aggressive rhythms and Sheri’s challenging, harsh and dark voice.

“We are not pamphleteers, we just want people to ask questions”

A feature that also stands out in Warsaw themes present in their texts. Nonhuman resources and his recent album, Design and Destroyaddress the facts of national political reality, such as terrorism, repression, authoritarianism or social crisis, scourges that were noted in the 1980s but which, according to the group, persist today.

Dante: “The aesthetic of the first album as it has a common denominator of death in various aspects. And in the second piece, because it’s destruction, it’s an explosion, something is knocked down (…) Themes, no matter how inspired they were in previous decades, they are factors that are still at work because of everything that happens. Violence happens every day, a lot of inequality and social problems, always.”

Ferdinand: “Our lyrics talk about rebellion against oppression of any kind, political, cultural, etc. Rebel against tyranny, be yourself, resist the system as much as you can, because we are not pamphleteers either. Symbolically destroy (…), let’s confirm this freedom a little. And the question of power has been constant in all our texts.”

Sheri: “Political problems have been there since there was a society, and now there is an explosion, political madness all over the world. So it’s still an ongoing issue and I believe it will be for many years to come.”

Ferdinand: “I think we are not a pamphlet or protest group. I like artists and composers who express a political demonstration, but I don’t like those who get into the car or do it in a very obvious way, very pamphletically. I don’t trust this kind of texts, authors, composers a little. I think our lyrics play on a level of ambiguity, which makes them appropriate both for what happened in the 80s and for the current situation.”

AT Warsawthe main author of the texts is Ferdinand; however, musically, the contributions of the three were fundamental to the architecture of their sound.

Ferdinand: “The words are written by me, and we include them as a song in electronic databases or jam what we do (…) Music has always been a job for the three of us. Sometimes someone also comes up with a more or less structured idea, everyone contributes different elements and we round it up. Sheri, for example, puts guitars there. In the first album, he added oscillators, noises, and not only the main voice, but also dissonances.

Sheri: “In general, what happens in the studio is very interesting, because the three of us have a lot in common. But at the same time, we go to other extremes in music and it comes together in an uncanny way, and I think this album feels like this convergence, this connection between the three, well Cool and nature.”

Dante: “When we rehearse together, we process the percussion a lot. We pedal on rhythm machines. color, it’s just recorded (…) The three of us decided on the final sound”

Next steps

Eight years have passed between the release of the first and second albums, will we ever wait that long for the third album again? Warsaw? For now, the trio is focused on getting Design and Destroy.

Sheri: “We don’t think about anything. Ideas and things like that falter, but we’re staying there, don’t worry until something clearer comes along to use, surprise.”

Dante: “There is a difference between this album and the previous one, and I find it nice because it shows a change in sound. the first. It’s a challenge too: not repeating the same formulas just to get a record out quickly.”

Ferdinand: “The three of us have parallel personal musical projects, and our times are a bit difficult to juggle. Thinking of a third album would be great, but don’t worry, there’s no pressure on us like there are other bands (…) We let things go and think about the present, what we should do now, that is, play together in 7 years”.

Dante: “Play and have fun. I think we should enjoy doing what we enjoy.”

Sheri: “Of course, fun, first of all.”

In the meantime, sound lovers Warsaw you can enjoy the official live presentation Design and Destroy next November 4 at Jirón Caylloma 660, Cercado de Lima. The party/concert will start at 21:00 and the national bands Impulso Perverso and Necrosante will take part as guests.
