“Angel of Death“(The Good Nurse) appeared in the Netflix catalog on October 26 and is currently one of the favorites on the platform and the most intriguing topic due to the true story it is inspired by. The film follows the case of Charles Cullen, a nurse who killed at least 29 patients in his care.
The perpetrator in question developed a close bond with the nurse. Amy Laurenwhen they worked together at Somerset Medical Center in New Jersey in the early 2000s, he became her confidante, helping her care for her daughters and covering for her when she suffered severe breathing difficulties due to a heart condition.
Looking for clues to clear up the circumstances of the death, two detectives approach Amy to ask for her help and investigate Charles, as they have already seen him as a murder suspect at other hospitals. Digging through their notes, they came to the conclusion that Cullen entered lethal dose medicines for their patients.
As if that wasn’t enough, they also uncovered accusations of harassment of colleagues and more bizarre deaths of patients in their care, even suspecting that perhaps about 400 victims. The agents asked Amy to continue interacting with Charles in order to find more evidence or statements that could be used against him.
Cullen and Lauren are played by Oscar winners Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain. The film was directed by Danish director Tobias Lindholm and is an adaptation of the book “Kind Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness and MurderJournalist Charles Graeber, who spent six years investigating the Cullens case.
The True Story of Charles Cullen
Charlie Cullen was born on February 22, 1960 in West Orange, New Jersey, to a working-class Irish Catholic family. He lost his parents while in high school and has always been described as a private individual, even making several suicide attempts.
In 1984, she entered nursing school in Montclair, New Jersey. According to the New York Times, he worked various jobs to fund his studies. He married Adrianna Taub, with whom he had two daughters, but the relationship fell apart in 1993 due to Cullen’s erratic behavior.
Charles worked for 16 years in hospitals in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. After his arrest in December 2003, he confessed to killing about 29 patients, often as a result of drug overdoses, at various medical centers where he worked.
In 2006 he was sentenced to 11 life sentences and has since been held in the New Jersey State Penitentiary in Trenton. In its turn, Amy Lauren left nursing and now works as an alternative medicine provider. His involvement in the case became known to the public only in 2013, when Graeber’s book was published. At the time, Lauren never told Cullen that she was the informant whose work led to his arrest.
