Price increase. two-thirds of the French have already cut back on food purchases

Faced with rising prices (5.6% year-on-year in September), almost three-quarters of French people have cut back on their daily spending. That’s one of the key lessons from Odoxa-Backbone Consulting’s latest survey Le Figaro*. Thus, the French made savings on leisure (77%), car travel (76%), heating (75%), household or household goods (66%) or even food costs (64%). “The “sobriety” affected consumers widely”, says Celine Brak, CEO of Odoxa. Active people between the ages of 35 and 49, the working classes and French people living in rural areas are most affected by inflation. And this downward trend in household consumption should accelerate.

Share of citizens who say they have cut back their consumer spending “a lot”. “It has increased significantly since last September.”, the study reveals. An increase of more than five points for leisure and six points for food shopping.

“It is not surprising that, given this context, All Saints’ Day is a casualtyemphasizes Celine Braque. Inflation and probably also the great strain on fuel has forced 42% of our fellow citizens who were planning to go on holiday. » Overall, more than seven in ten have canceled or changed their plans.

A popular price shield

The measures announced by Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday evening were well received. Nine out of ten French people (92%) consider the extension of the tariff shield to limit the price increase of electricity and gas to be positive. Likewise, the extension of the tariff shield to artisans, small businesses and local authorities convinces 87% of citizens. Fuel vouchers for drivers who use their vehicles a lot and compensating food price increases through targeted aid for the most disadvantaged (students, low-income families) are also approved by 80% and 78% of our compatriots.

However, the majority of French people do not trust Emmanuel Macron’s actions to secure the country’s energy supply in the coming months (50%). Nor to protect their purchasing power from inflation (61%). 81 percent of supporters of the rally, in particular, do not trust the president on this topic. They are 79 percent among the Insumis, 67 percent among the Republicans.

*This survey was conducted among a representative sample of 1,005 French people aged 18 and over who were interviewed online between October 27 and 28, 2022.
