5 mistakes we all make with our conditioner

Focus on this important step, which is not always well implemented in practice.

In the midst of spreading out treatments and other hair products, it’s hard to prioritize the essentials in your routine. If shampoo is never questioned, other steps such as mask or conditioner can be forgotten or willfully ignored. I’ts wrong. “The conditioner itself plays its part in helping to detangle and add shine,” explains Vanessa Gianni, training manager at Jean-Louis David. But it remains to apply it well so as not to nullify our efforts or get the opposite result we hoped for.

Conditioner, but above all… Aftercare

This gesture, which has become mandatory for most people, however, is not rooted in everyone’s habits. Some people prefer to infuse their hair with oils before brushing. Others replace it with a treatment or mask. In short, the daily steps are not always obvious to everyone. “Many people today still make the mistake of chaining shampoo, then conditioner, and finally care, in that order. When in reality the treatment should be as a second step because it needs to really penetrate the hair. The conditioner then closes the ritual. Because with its more acidic PH, it will tighten the scales and therefore make it easier to detangle and make the hair shiny.

Our choice of conditioners

Apply it from the root

Another common mistake we see for Vanessa Gianni is in the application. “You should never apply conditioner to the roots, but lift from the ends, to the lengths. And it is better to put a little product in the beginning and add more if necessary. Vanessa Gianni also notes that for oily-prone hair, applying it to the scalp will make it worse. Should be avoided therefore absolutely.

Leave

Conditioner is not a mask, so you don’t need to let it soak in. “We’re more into instant products. In general, we knead the lengths and ends for a minute, but do not let it sit. It is of no interest.” The stylist also recommends detangling with a brush such as a Tangle Teezer with long bristles or a wide-toothed comb, as wet hair is very fragile. This will prevent it from breaking. As for rinsing, with shampoo we opt for lukewarm water with a final splash of cold water for maximum shine.

Wrong question choice

Dry, frizzy, colored hair… Hair routines address different needs depending on the nature of each one. Sometimes we combine several. So how to choose? “The healthier the scalp, the healthier the hair.” Therefore, it is better to use a shampoo that will treat scalp problems (excess oil, dandruff, etc.). “Especially since the conditioner is not applied to the roots. Therefore, the latter will target the needs of the roots and ends. So we will choose it as moisturizing, nourishing, volumizing or even restorative.

Replace it with a second shampoo

Some women tend to do two shampoos. “We always say that the first washes and the second cures. If you follow this regimen every day, and therefore the hair is not very dirty, then one shampoo is enough. On the other hand, we can make two if we clean them once a week. But in any case, this does not replace the role of conditioner at the end of the ritual.
