Rock and roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis dies at 87

Famous American rock singer and pianist Jerry Lee Lewis, died at the age of 87 at his home in Memphis, USA, reports Diversity. The artist became the only one to survive the golden age of the genre after the death of Little Richard in 2020.

“Judith, his seventh wife, was by his side when he passed away,” spokesman Zack Farnum said in a statement. “In his final days, he said he welcomed the afterlife and was not afraid,” she adds.

Although the cause of death is unknown, the musician has been suffering from various health issues since 2019 after suffering a stroke that forced him to cancel all of his concerts and public appearances. Last Wednesday, some media erroneously reported his death.

Lee Lewis excelled with songs like Large balls of fire, giving the title to a film about his musical career. The artist was famous in the 50s for his rock and roll songs, and later, after overcoming several scandals, he returned to the fore in the 70s with country songs, regaining lost popularity.

Jerry Lee Lewis born September 29, 1935 in Ferryday, Los Angeles (hence his first professional nickname “Ferriday’s fireball”) and began playing the piano at the age of nine. His keyboard influences were Moon Mullican, Del Wood and musician Merrill Moore.

In 1952, during a trip to New Orleans, 16-year-old Lewis recorded his first songs. A poor student, he dropped out of school, and his mother enrolled him in a Bible school in Texas, from which he was promptly expelled.

In 1986 he joined Rock Hall of Famealong with other style pioneers; later entered Rockabilly Hall of Fame. In 2003 the magazine rolling stone ranked him 24th as one of the greatest musicians of the century.

– 1956: Participates in Memphis, Tennessee in a legendary recording with three greats of rock and country: Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash.

– 1957: He records “Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On”, which together with “Great Balls of Fire” makes him one of the biggest stars of the time.

– 1958: The press finds out about his marriage to a 13-year-old cousin, and a scandal erupts. The couple had two children before divorcing in 1970.

– 1968: Returns to the stage with country records.
