Universal’s horror film “Halloween Ends” had a very auspicious opening this weekend, topping the box office. USA D Canada with an estimated gross of $41.3 million, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations said Sunday.
The film, the latest in a long line of lucrative ‘halloween’, again starring Jamie Lee Curtis, is replete with scenes of throat cutting, strangulation, fatal falls. A return to the slasher genre that he represented so well in the late 70s when the first movie in the Michael Myers saga came out.
Analysts were predicting a slightly higher fee, around $50 million. But given its simultaneous launch on the service streaming from Peacock and costing only $30 million, its turnout was “superb,” said David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research.
Top 10 at the box office in North America
Another horror film, Paramount’s Smile, came in second with $12.4 million. It stars Sosie Bacon as a psychotherapist whose understanding of reality is shaken by a horrific event.
In third place, one position below last weekend’s premiere, was Sony’s computer-animated musical comedy Crocodile Lilo with $7.4 million. The cast is performed by Javier Bardem, Shawn Mendes and Constance Wu.
The King Woman, with Viola Davis as the leader of the African Warrior Army, also from Sony, held a solid fourth place with $3.7 million in revenue.
And in fifth place, down two spots, was the 20th-century thriller Amsterdam, starring Christian Bale, Margot Robbie and John David Washington, grossing $2.9 million.
