A career spanning more than half a century. This is what the Japanese designer who died at the age of 84 will leave behind. “He died on the evening of August 5,” an employee of his office in Tokyo told Agence France Presse on Tuesday, without giving further details. The Japanese public TV channel also reported on his death.

Born April 22, 1938, in Hiroshima, Western Japan, Issey Miyake was seven years old on August 6, 1945, when the United States dropped the first atomic bomb in history on his hometown, killing 140,000 people and traumatizing them for life. It was located three kilometers from the epicenter. He survived, but his mother died three years later due to radiation.

Between Paris and Tokyo

After barely graduating from Tokyo’s Tama Fine Arts University, he moved to Paris in 1965 and studied at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne school. He then worked for Guy Laroche and Hubert de Givenchy. In 1970, he founded the Miyake design studio in Tokyo, dedicated to making clothes that challenge preconceived notions of design. He then integrates art and technology as well as traditional artisan techniques into his work. And finds his brand by designing one-piece garments. Since the 1980s, Issey Miyake has brought his style to the world, using materials never seen before in fashion. In 1999, he signed his last women’s collection under his own name, thirty years after he founded his brand.
