Born April 22, 1938, in Hiroshima, Western Japan, Issey Miyake was seven years old on August 6, 1945, when the United States dropped the first atomic bomb in history on his hometown, killing 140,000 people and traumatizing them for life. Between Paris and Tokyo
After barely graduating from Tokyo’s Tama Fine Arts University, he moved to Paris in 1965 and studied at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne school. He then worked for Guy Laroche and Hubert de Givenchy. In 1970, he founded the Miyake design studio in Tokyo, dedicated to making clothes that challenge preconceived notions of design.
