Pietro Citati, Italian critic and biographer of Kafka and other great writers, has died at the age of 92.

Renowned Italian literary critic and writer, Pietro Citattidied this Wednesday at the age of 92 and is remembered as a “strict” intellectual and one of the most distinguished voices in Italian literature.

Acting Minister of Culture Dario Franceschini mourned the death of this writer, author of famous biographies of great figures of history.

“One of the most celebrated and respected voices of Italian literary criticism is leaving. This is a sad day for a culture that is losing a strict intellectual, never banal,” the minister admitted in a statement expressing condolences to the family. .

Pietro Citatti (Florence, 1930), who died at his home in the Tuscan city of Roccamare, devoted much of his long and prolific career to letters, literary criticism, articles in such media as Republic or Il Corriere della Sera.

But especially noteworthy are the biographies that Pietro Citatti signed, in which he delved into characters of the level of Franz Kafka, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Leo Tolstoy, Giacomo Leopardi or Katherine Mansfield.

In 1970 he received the Viareggio Prize for an essay on the German playwright, and together with Tolstoy he received the Strega Prize in 1984, Italy’s premier literary prize.

A close friend of such personalities as Italo Calvino or Pier Paolo Pasolini, he also wrote many essays on “European literary civilization” from the time of Homer to Vladimir Nabokov.

Farewell to Pietro Citati

President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella joined the condolences and reminded Pietro Cittati as “one of the greatest interpreters of the Italian literary panorama” and “a refined author”.

“I express my deepest condolences to his family and to everyone who collaborated with him or admired his works,” the Italian head of state said in a statement.
