Marina Fois and Denis Menochet are terrorized by their neighbors in the dark Spanish thriller As Bestas

KOTSANIAK – Spanish director Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s feature film, which premiered out of competition at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, stars Marina Fois and Denis Menochet in a dark thriller with a faux-Western vibe.

Spanish thriller master Rodrigo Sorogoyen returns As Bestas, his sixth feature film, which was presented out of competition at the recent Cannes Film Festival. This dark film with a faux western air depicts the daily life of Antoine and Olga (Denis Menochet and Marina Fois), a couple of neo-villagers who have just landed in the mountains of Galicia to start organic farming there.

These French also want to revive the declining Spanish countryside by voluntarily restoring the abandoned houses there. Opposing the wind farm project, they face the hostility of their neighbors Xan and Anta (Luis Zahena and Diego Anido), two brothers who relied on this facility to sell their farm and leave their miserable lives. A neighborhood dispute turns into harassment and soon hatred, and the film gradually turns into a thrilling thriller.

Marina Fois’ interview about the film

Far from being Manichaean, As Bestas shows with incredible subtlety the tension, anxieties and paranoia that accompany the breakdown of the social game through masterful staging. The men are depicted with their brutality, their true liveliness, as the title of the film suggests.

Released this Wednesday, July 20th.
