Why doesn’t the Rapunzel movie have the same name as the tale?

Find out what is the reason that led the story of Rapunzel being told at Disney with a different title from the tale: ‘Rolled’!

The ‘wrapped’ animation was released in 2010 by Disney to tell the stories of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, a couple who graduate after embarking on a journey of self -discovery, freedom and love.

It turns out that, in the plot, Rapunzel ends up trapped in a tower for years without knowing his true history of origin and without being allowed to leave the place for one reason: satisfy Gothel’s vanity, the witch who kidnapped her to use the magical properties of 21 meters of the princess to stay youth.

One day, however, when Rapunzel was alone, the place where he was eventually invaded by Flynn Rider, the most sought after thief in the kingdom. She captures him and makes a deal with him: Flynn may have what he stole back if he helps her realize the dream of seeing the floating lanterns that climb to heaven annually during his birthday-the problem is that he should do it before Mama Gothel returns home and finds out that Rapunzel broke her orders.

It is worth mentioning that the story is based on the German fairy tale “Rapunzel” Grimm BrothersBut even so, it did not follow the example of previous studio productions such as ‘Cinderella’ (1950), ‘The Little Mermaid’ (1989), ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (1991), among others, who kept the original titles of the plots in which they were inspired.

Why doesn’t the Rapunzel movie have the same name as the tale?

It turns out that Disney opted for a different title due to the results obtained with ‘The Princess and the Frog’, a narrative that recreates a tale of Grimm Brothers – Prince Sapo – Handwritten in 1810, from the adaptation of Ed Baker which bears the same name of the animation, and ended up not reaching the box office numbers that would appeal to Disney.

This is because, although it introduces the return to traditional 2D animation and is Disney’s first movie with a black princess, the story ended up not achieving box office numbers that would please Disney. The reason? The studio speculated that the word “princess” in the title could have alienated the male audience, thus generating less to the cinema.

Trying to prevent Rapunzel’s plot from ending the same way, the studio executives eventually opted to put in the 2010 movie a title that was neutral in terms of gender, as the former Walt Disney Animation Studios and co-founder of Pixar, clarified, clarified in the movie, clarified. Ed Catmullto The Los Angeles Times (via Collider).

“We didn’t want to be placed in a box. Some people may assume it’s a fairy tale for girls when it is not. We make movies to be appreciated and loved by everyone.”

Thus came ‘rolled’, a title that does not direct the viewer to focus only on the princess, after all, the name refers to the interconnected stories of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, which emerged in the main male role in accordance with the choice of a neutral title.

Although today the title became one of Disney’s contemporary classics, some were disappointed by the choice, such as former Disney and Pixar, FLOYD Normanwho, as revealed by the Los Angeles Times, described the change as “besides stupid,” stating that this decision came from a desperate studio attempt to find the right audience.

However, the directors Nathan Greno and Byron Howard They defended the title to EW by comparing it with another great Disney seal title: “Toy Story”, the result of the partnership with Pixar.

“You wouldn’t call Toy Story” Buzz Lightyear, “we really needed a title that represented what the movie is, and which is a pair, and starred in Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder.”

This, which became the studio’s 50th animation, raised about $ 591 million at the world box office, forming a solid fan base that even opened doors for a new project with the characters: a live-action, which may have been paused, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

‘Wrapped’ is available for streaming on Disney+.
