Since the release of the first movie, in the early 2000s, the plot has become extremely worshiped by fans for not only presenting the friendship story between Lilo and Stitch, but also for showing fraternal love between the little girl and her older sister, Nani, who became responsible for the family after her parents and needs to do everything not to lose her younger custody.
At the end of the movie, Lilo is captured by Gantu, causing Stitch, Nani, Jumba and Pleakley to save her, which was already in a plane on the way to space. After being able to capture the girl, when everyone was saying goodbye to Stitch, who would be taken back to space, the great counselor realizes that little blue alien had found a family and allows him to continue on earth.
However, what many do not know is that the scene of Stitch’s rescue attempt was quite different in the original version, but had to be changed due to a historical fact that shook the United States and the world: the terrorist attack from September 11 to the twin towers.
The discarded scene
First of all, you need to remember what was the September 11 attack. Occurred in 2001, that day, members of the al-Qaeda terrorist group, led by the late Osama Bin Laden, kidnapped four American commercial aircraft, where two hit the World Trade Center towers, known as twin towers.
The third plane hit the sides of the Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of Defense, while the fourth fell in Pennsylvania. In total, the attacks left 2,977 dead and more than 6,000 injured, being considered as the attack with the largest deaths in history, according to the BBC.
As Collider explains, at the time the attack happened, the animation “Lilo & Stitch” was practically finalized, and had a scene that could be considered insensitive because it contains similarities to the recent attack.
Following, to save Lilo, who was captured by Gantu, Stitch, Nani, Jumba and Pleakley steal a plane of the Boeing 747 model (similar to those used in the September 11 attack), and try to chase the villain’s ship where the little girl was.
Due to the attacks of the villains and the various risky maneuvers, the aircraft begins to lose altitude and the characters need to dodge the buildings of the city of Honolulu, with the wheels reaching some buildings. Look!

Taking into consideration that the film would debut just a few months after the attack, Disney decided to change the scene with respect to the victims. In the final version, the Boeing 747 was replaced by Jumba’s red ship, while the buildings became mountains.
Lilo & Stitch animation is available on Disney+. Live-action adaptation is premiered in theaters scheduled for May 22.
