Why will Netflix’s ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ be released in theaters?

Discover the reasons that led Netflix to bring the new adaptation of ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ to cinemas first

Among the most recent news about Netflix’s adaptation of “The Chronicles of Narnia” is the revelation that, despite being distributed by the streaming platform, the film will be released first in theaters and only then be made available to Netflix subscribers. service.

The launch grid is:

  • On November 26, 2016, Thanksgiving Day 2026, the film goes into theaters;
  • On December 25th, the film premieres on Netflix.

The film will hit the big screen in IMAX format, which provides a much grander experience in theaters, as the screens are larger and have a different shape, the sound is better and the seating distribution is different. There are also differences in the resolution of the images presented in relation to traditional rooms.

Why will Netflix’s ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ be released in theaters?

The choice was justified by the co-CEO of Netflix, Ted Sarandoswho, during the company’s call to discuss fourth-quarter earnings reported by Deadline, revealed that “there is no change in our theatrical exhibition strategy”.

“Our core strategy is to offer our members exclusive first-run films on Netflix. The release of Narnia in IMAX is a launch tactic. We often release films theatrically a few weeks early to qualify for awards, meet festival requirements, and boost publicity. In the case of Narnia, it is a special two-week event. I think this is very different from other screenings because I doubt anyone has a screen as big as an IMAX screen at home,” Sarandos explained.

He also highlighted that, with this decision, the process of launching the title “becomes much simpler”.

“Mostly, I want to say that I’m incredibly excited to be working with Greta [Gerwig, diretora do longa] in this film. We’re so excited to get it into production and be able to talk about how amazing this film is, more than just the screens it will be shown on. She is a fantastic director, and this is a really exciting project.”
