Why does Aslan destroy Narnia in the books?

There is a big reason behind Aslan’s decision to destroy the fantasy world full of magical beings of ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’; find out which one!

Those who followed the films in the “Chronicles of Narnia” franchise would never have imagined that the fantastic world dominated by the White Witch (Tilda Swinton) in which Lúcia (Georgie Henley), Edmundo (Skandar Keynes), Susan (Anna Popplewell) and Pedro (William Moseley) will stop after finding a portal in a magical wardrobe, it is completely destroyed by decision of the lion Aslan (voice of Liam Neeson).

This is because the film adaptation of the writer’s works of the same name CS Lewiswho released the first of seven books in 1950, was not completed, as only “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” (2005), “Prince Caspian” (2008) and “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” (2010), thus leaving four titles off the big screen due to the low box office performance of the second and third film.

In this way, only fans who read the books were able to discover the fate of the characters and of Narnia, as these events are shown in the last copy of the saga “The Last Battle”, which was placed on bookstore shelves in 1956.

Why does Aslan destroy Narnia in the books?

This is because, on the pages, it is revealed that, after so many battles, Aslan comes to the conclusion that there is no way to save Narnia. The wise lion admits that there is no way to reverse the evil that dominated the place and the only solution he finds is to try to start over, far from those lands.

As reported by the ScreenRant portal, Aslan makes the decision and meets with the residents of Narnia to have a type of trial of their actions so that it can be decided who will be the ones who will follow Aslan to a better place, nicknamed the Country of Aslan.

On the way to the new Narnia, all those who remained faithful to Aslan managed to enter, while those who opposed him or gave up following him lost the magic that dominated them, causing them to become common animals. In the meantime, Narnia’s vegetation is consumed by lizards, salamanders and dragons, and ends up being destroyed by water in a great flood.

The Country of Aslan is described as a place that can never be corrupted and even has its passage to the human world closed by Pedro and Aslan. It is possible to interpret that the place functions as an afterlife, as it is revealed that Pedro, Edmundo and Lúcia, alongside their parents and other friends from Narnia, are no longer alive, as they suffered a serious train accident.

References to biblical stories in The Chronicles of Narnia?

What happens in Narnia is similar to several events found in the Bible, where the world goes through great destruction and is rebuilt in a different way, as can be found in the stories of Sodom and Gomorrah, Noah’s Ark and the Apocalypse.

The parallel, however, is not a coincidence, after all, Lewis He was a Christian, and used excerpts from the sacred book for several portrayals of humanity found in the works he wrote.

A new chance for The Chronicles of Narnia

Although the ending didn’t make it to the big screen, there is a new chance for it to happen. It turns out that Netflix will make available a new adaptation of the “Chronicles of Narnia” franchise, which will haveGreta Gerwig (Barbie) as director, which, if it has good box office results, could bring hope that the remaining four books will be produced or there will be a reboot of the franchise.

It is possible that the first title adapted is “The Magician’s Nephew”, from 1955, which works as a prequel to the story, as it narrates events that precede the first published book in the series. Still, there is no official confirmation of the plot.

Recordings should begin in June 2025. The release should first take place in theaters on Thanksgiving Day 2026 (which will be celebrated on November 26th), and then on the streaming platform as a Christmas gift to subscribers, as it can be watched from December 25th, according to Puck News (via Omelete).
