In a recent interview, Hwang Dong Hyuk, director of ‘Round 6’, commented on the former BIGBANG member TOP’s former controversy
Thanos, the retired rapper who decides to participate in the deadly games in the series “Round 6”, played by the singer and actor Choi Seung-hyunthe TOPformer member of BIGBANG, has become one of the most talked about characters on social media since the premiere of the second season on December 26th.
In the story, Choi Su Bong, known as Thanos, is an eccentric and controversial rapper who lost all his money after making a failed investment in cryptocurrencies. During the episodes, the audience also discovers that the character uses illicit substances, managing to get pills hidden in his necklace during the competition.
Since the announcement of the casting of TOP for the role of Thanos, many South Koreans have questioned the director’s decision Hwang Dong Hyukdue to the idol’s former controversy over marijuana use in 2017. The character’s relationship with drug use also generated even more criticism of the singer’s participation in the series.
In a recent interview with MT News (via Koreaboo), Dong Hyuk spoke out on the controversy of TOP involving drugs, where he said that, until the press conference to promote the new season, he had not realized that the star had still not been forgiven by the public, even after so long.
“Until the press conference, I didn’t realize that TOP hadn’t been pardoned at this point. When I cast him, I researched the history of celebrities who have revived their careers after drug scandals, going back to Park Chung Hee’s administration. At that time, there were crackdowns on marijuana use, and many were allowed to return to the industry after about four years. Considering it’s been six to seven years for Seung Hyun [T.O.P]I thought enough time had passed for people to accept it. However, I was surprised by the negative reaction.”
The filmmaker also completed his reasoning by stating that, despite the negative comments, he kept casting the singer, as he wanted to work with him, and give him a chance to show the public that he deserves forgiveness.
He said, “After seeing the controversies and your comments about not making a comeback in Korea, I realized, ‘This is a bigger problem than I thought.’ But personally, I couldn’t just say, ‘You can’t be part of this because you haven’t been forgiven.’ I wanted to work with him to create something that could show if he could earn forgiveness. In the end, it is up to the audience to decide whether they will accept you again after seeing your work.”
