Why doesn’t Susan return to Narnia in the last book?

Understand why Susana is the only one not to return to Narnia in the last book in the franchise of ‘The Chronicles of Narnia, by CS Lewis

Currently, fans of the “Chronicles of Narnia” franchise are eagerly awaiting the release of the new adaptation of the book franchise, which is scheduled to premiere in December 2026, and will be directed by Greta Gerwigfilmmaker known for her work on the live-action “Barbie”.

Although there is still no confirmation, rumors suggest that the new production should adapt the book “The Magician’s Nephew”, the first in the chronology of the universe, responsible for presenting the entire creation process of Narnia, years before the arrival of the brothers Pedro, Susana , Edmundo and Lúcia Pevensie.

It is worth remembering that, in the 2000s, Disney made the first film adaptation of the franchise, however, it only recreated three of the seven books: “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” (2005), “Prince Caspian” (2008) and “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” (2010).

For this reason, those who did not have the opportunity to read the literary works did not follow important moments in the plot, such as the tragic fate of the Pevensie brothers.

In the last book in the franchise, “The Last Battle” (1956), Pedro, Edmundo and Lúcia, alongside Professor Digory, Eustáquio, Jill and Polly, the other friends from Narnia, return to the magical kingdom after receiving a vision with a request of help from King Tirian, stating that the region was being destroyed.

It turns out that, at the time, Aslan created an apocalypse in the enchanted world, as he realized that the land he created was corrupt and needed to be rebuilt. As a result, while preparing to return, the Pevensies, along with their parents and other friends from Narnia, die in a train accident.

In the end, the tragedy ends up serving as a portal to Narnia, where they are summoned by Alan to accompany him to the Country of Aslan, a place similar to paradise, with Pedro forever closing the passage between the magical world and that of humans.

Despite Tirian’s call appearing to her brothers, Susana was the only one who did not return to Narnia and, consequently, ends up being left alone after the death of her family, and her passage to the Country of Aslan.

But why didn’t Susana return to Narnia?

The answer also appears in the book “The Last Battle” (1956), where it is revealed that Susana has lost faith in Narnia, and no longer believes in the magical world or in everything that has ever lived there.

When the seven friends of Narnia return to the magical world and meet with King Tirian, the monarch asks Pedro about Susana’s whereabouts, with the older Pevensie explaining that his sister “is no longer a friend of Narnia”.

Eustáquio also says that, currently, the girl believes that the place is nothing more than a fantasy game that they used to play when they were children. Furthermore, Jill also states that Susana “now only thinks about lingerie, makeup and social commitments”.
