The singer honestly shared how the pressure to achieve the ideal body and meet industry expectations affected her mental and physical health. During the program, Hwasa described how, when he was a trainee, he used to not eat to comply with the demands of the competitive K-Pop environment, where appearance and weight often determine success.

“I didn’t eat anything at that time, because it was a period when I had to work hard and I didn’t know what the right thing to do was,” he revealed.

Furthermore, the artist recalled that, during the weigh-in days, she and the other trainees also made other efforts to get rid of the weight before weighing themselves. The MAMAMOO member also recounted a harrowing experience in which she longed to eat some “injeolmi,” a variety of Korean rice ball, but when she gave in to the craving, she felt overcome with guilt.

“That’s how I ended up being anorexic,” she said when remembering that time in her life.

Now, Hwasa has become an advocate for healthy bodies in the industry, encouraging a healthier and more realistic approach to industry beauty standards.

“Maria” — The strength of Hwasa’s art

After its dark moments, the song “Maria”, released by Hwasa in 2020, it became a powerful reflection of her personal journey and a form of artistic expression for her and her fans. In the lyrics, the singer talks about the fight against external expectations and the search for freedom and self-acceptance.

The song is a kind of manifesto for the idol, who, when referring to “Maria”, alludes to the figure who, in many cultures, represents purity and feminine strength, but who also suffers pressure and judgement.
