James Gunn shares details about Flash’s future in the new DCU and plans for a possible new film for the character
The new DC Universe is beginning to take shape under the leadership of james gunn and Peter Safranbut fans will still have to wait a while to see the next Flash movie. Although Superman David Corenswet already gained space in the 2025 release schedule, DC’s creative director was clear when talking about the future of Flash, especially after the recent debut of “The Flash” in 2023, which was part of the last cycle of the old Extended Universe of DC (DCEU).
After being asked, in a recent interaction with fans on social media, about the decision for the third film in the new production to be ‘Clayface’, Batman’s villain, and not a better-known character, such as Flash or Wonder Woman, james gunn recalled once again that the rule of the new DC Studios is that all projects scheduled for release have their scripts completed.
Furthermore, he clarified that Flash’s development is “slowed down”, that is, on pause, leading fans to believe that the greatest caution for a new film about the hero is especially due to the 2023 film, therefore, the director’s preference wait to restart Barry Allen’s story.
What happened in Flash (2023)?
Released at a time of transition, the film starring Ezra Miller brought back Michael Keaton like Batman, creating great expectations, but ended up receiving mixed reviews and did not achieve the expected success at the box office. When james gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios at the end of 2022, the film was already ready, but the duo’s approach to the new universe has been different, prioritizing solid scripts and well-defined characters.
The CEO’s strategy is to build a solid foundation for the new DC universe, starting with Superman. David Corenswet and Batman from “Brave and the Bold”, instead of rushing versions of characters like the Flash, leaving time for an impactful reinvention of the scarlet speedster.
Although Barry Allen’s solo film is on pause, the character will not disappear from the DCU. The villain Gorilla Grodd has already appeared in “Creature Commandos”, and the hero may be referenced in other ongoing projects. In this beginning of reconstruction, Gunn seeks quality independent stories, with each character having the necessary time to develop.
