The artist no longer has the right to perform the song Million Years Ago, because the court recognized it as plagiarism of the composition of Brazilian composer Toninho Geraes.
British singer Adele is at the center of a music scandal over her hit Million Years Ago, The Guardian reports.
The court ruled that the song, released in 2015, was a plagiarism of the composition Mulheres by Brazilian composer Toninho Geraes, created in 1995.
The trial began after Geraes filed a lawsuit requesting an examination of the similarities between the two works. According to the composer’s lawyer, Mulheres is an iconic song for Brazilian music, which has been copied many times to create international hits.
“This is a sign for Brazilian music that is often copied to create successful international hits,” said lawyer Fredimio Trotta.
The court confirmed that Adele’s song did indeed infringe Geraes’ copyright. As a result, the singer was ordered to immediately remove the track from all streaming platforms.
In addition, Toninho Geraes has placed additional financial demands: moral compensation in the amount of $160,000 and damages to his producer Greg Kurstin.
If Adele’s labels, Sony and Universal do not comply with the court’s decision, they will be fined $8,000 for each violation. However, companies can still appeal this decision.
It was previously reported that Miley Cyrus is at the center of a scandal over her hit Flowers, which topped the charts in 2023 and won a Grammy.
Adele is taking an indefinite break from her career
