Understand the recent controversy that caused the members of NewJeans to change the biography of their new social media account
Last weekend, the members of NewJeans opened a new Instagram account — without the management of ADOR, their former company — to maintain direct contact with fans after the quintet announced their departure from the agency at the end of November.
Since then, the new page, which can be found by the user @jeanzforfree, has been a frequent topic on social media. This is because, in addition to the enormous repercussion of unfiltered content published by Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyeinwhich has pleased fans for showing the artists’ natural comedic side, the account has also been involved in its first controversy.
Color confusion?
When the user was opened, the page’s biography had five hearts, blue, pink, yellow, green and purple, responsible for representing each of the members. However, internet users pointed out that the colors would be the same as those used by Red Velvet, a girl group that has also had the creative direction of Min Hee Jincreator of NewJeans.
This is because, within K-pop, it is extremely common for groups to adopt symbolic colors that represent each of the members. In Red Velvet, for example, Irene uses the color pink, Seulgi the yellow, Wendy the blue, Joy the green and Yeri the purple.
On social media, some Reveluvs (Red Velvet fans) began to criticize Min Hee Jinfor copying the group’s concept.
“MJH [Min Hee Jin] really picked up Red Velvet’s iconic colors. Like, these colors are a huge part of Red Velvet’s identity. So if you think the reveluvs are exaggerating, I’m sure if it were the other way around you’d be just as mad,” one user wrote.

“YES. THESE ARE THE COLORS OF RED VELVET SINCE 2014,” said another.
On the other hand, certain Bunnies (NewJeans fans) were in displeasure of the businesswoman, stating that the attitude could not be considered plagiarism, taking into account that the idea could have been hers. However, as reported by the Koreaboo portal, there is no information that Hee Jin would have participated in the decision to choose the colors.
“mhj copying mhj, these RV colors [Red Velvet] they were given by her”, commented a fan.
As the discussion grew on the internet, the members of NewJeans soon decided to change their account bios to avoid further controversy. Now, instead of colored hearts, it is possible to find the five animals representing each member: a bear for Minjian otter to Hannia dog for Daniellea cat for Haerin and a mouse to Hyein.
