Last week, the film “Moana 2” arrived in national cinemas, a sequel to the renowned 2016 animation that introduced Disney’s first Polynesian princess to the world. Upon its debut, the new animated feature has already grossed more than US$221 million in the United States in just five days, and has broken numerous records internationally.
According to data released by The Walt Disney Company itself, the reunion of Moana and Maui opened in much of the world with US$165 million, and has a global collection to date of US$386 million, making it the second biggest international debut of the year.
Alan Bergmanco-president of Disney Entertainment, said “’Moana 2′ exceeded our expectations this weekend and is a testament to the phenomenon that Moana has become.”

This is a moment of celebration, and we are grateful to all the spectators and fans who helped make this a record debut”, concludes the businessman.
In Brazil, other records broken by “Moana 2” are: 2nd biggest opening for an animated film of all time (behind only Inside Out 2); 1st biggest opening for a Walt Disney Animation Studios film of all time in Brazil and worldwide; and 9th market opening of all time.
In the United States, production also records the following records:
- Biggest Black Friday box office ever, with US$54.5 million (surpassing Frozen 2/US$34.2 million);
- Biggest Thanksgiving weekend ever, by a big difference ($221 million in 5 days, $135.5 million in 3 days, beating Frozen 2/$125 million in 5 days and $94 million in 3 days );
- Thanksgiving with US$28 million (almost double Frozen 2/ US$15 million);
- Biggest 5-day opening of all time (surpassing Super Mario Bros. The Movie/ US$204.6 million);
- Biggest opening on Thanksgiving Day, with a big difference (more than double Frozen / US$94 million in 5 days and US$67 million in 3 days);
- Disney now holds the 7 biggest Thanksgiving premieres of all time and 9 of the 10 biggest.
