With sets that build the Land of Oz, “Wicked” has a location that can be seen up close by fans of the production; look!
One of the positive points of “Wicked”, an adaptation of the Broadway play of the same name that hit theaters on November 21, is the scenography. This is because the Emerald City, the Land of the Munchkins, and much of what is shown in Oz, was built from scratch, as shown in a video released by Universal Pictures, the feature film’s distributor; look:
“We knew we wanted ‘Wicked’ to be immersive. What’s it like being in Oz? Feel it at your fingertips,” said the feature film’s director, Jon M. Chu. “And if you want to feel like you’re in that world, you have to build it.”
Among the tangible and real locations in the film is the Munchkin Land tulip field, which featured around 9 million tulip plants planted exclusively to produce the rainbow look seen on the big screen.
How was the tulip field created?
So that all these flowers could be real, the “Wicked” team went looking for Mark Eves and Susanne Evesthe owners of the Norfolk Tulips agricultural cooperative, located in Norfolk, England, who gained fame on social media when a video of the huge field of tulips they have began circulating, causing Jon M. Chu wanted to work with the couple.
Thus, as reported by the Casa Vogue portal, negotiations began in 2022, and the process of ordering and planting tulips on the 25-acre plot of land was soon completed so that everything was perfect for filming, which began in 2022 and completed in January 2024.
It is worth remembering that fans of the film were only able to discover the real location of the beautiful tulip field about a week ago, when the cooperative confirmed that they were involved in the project. In a social media post on Nov. 22, they wrote, “We’ve been keeping a big secret for a while now. We’re proud to share that we hosted Munchkin Land for the new Wicked movie”; look:
Can the tulip field be visited?
Still, the news came as a gift, as fans who live in England — or those willing to travel there — will not only have the chance to observe the beautiful scenery on cinema screens, but also the opportunity to see the tulip field in person!
It turns out that, in April 2025, ticket sales will begin to visit the site managed by the owners Mark Eves and Susanne Eveswhich have opened the Norfolk field to visitors since 2021, as revealed by the Casa Vogue portal.
The place is open during the months in which the flowers bloom, that is, between April and May, and the proceeds from tickets, which cost £7.50 for adults and £5 for children (R$57 and R$38 respectively, at current price), is donated to the Tapping House.
More about Wicked
“Wicked” adapts the musical theater play of the same name first shown in 2003, whose plot comes from the book “Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz”, written by Gregory Maguire and published in 1995 as a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” (1900), by the author L. Frank Baum.
The story follows Glinda’s past (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), students from Shiz University who end up creating an unlikely friendship by becoming roommates and who will undergo transformations in the connection they form and the way they are seen after a trip to find the Wizard of Oz, as this will trace the paths so that they become known as the Good Witch of the North and the Wicked Witch of the West, respectively.
