Disney’s new animated film earned $57.5 million in the United States on its first day of release, and worldwide box office receipts totaled $66.3 million.
Disney Animation’s Moana 2 earned $57.5 million on its first day in US theaters, setting a new opening day record. The film grossed $66.3 million at the worldwide box office, reports The Variety.
Experts predict that Moana 2 could earn at least $175 million in the United States in its first five days of release, making it the most successful Thanksgiving premiere in history. The previous record was held by Frozen 2 with $125 million and The Hunger Games: Burning with $109 million.
The film now ranks third in terms of opening grosses at the worldwide box office among animated films, behind only The Incredibles 2 ($71.2 million) and Inside Out 2 ($63.6 million).
Along with Moana 2, other highly anticipated premieres have also begun. Universal’s Wicked: The Enchantress earned $20.4 million on its first day and is expected to reach $97 million after five days at the box office. Another high-profile release, Paramount’s Gladiator 2, earned $6.6 million on Wednesday and is expecting around $40 million in its first five days.
It was previously reported that Disney has published the first teaser for the film adaptation of the beloved 2000s cartoon Lilo and Stitch.
