Eight years later, “Moana 2” premieres this Thursday, the 28th, the long-awaited sequel that brings the young protagonist on a new mission alongside the charismatic demigod Maui (voice in Portuguese of Saulo Vasconcelos).
After receiving an unexpected call from her traveling ancestors, Moana ventures once again into the distant seas of Oceania in search of answers to big questions, going further than her ancestors ever went. On her new journey, the protagonist once again has the support of her beloved friends Heihei and Pua, as well as new recruits: an unlikely crew that makes the journey truly memorable.

Moana
Three years after her first voyage, Moana is now an experienced navigator and has become the beloved leader of her community. With more knowledge and maturity, she now thinks about the future of her people, which leads her to face a new and difficult mission.
“Growth is one of the main themes of the film. Moana goes through an internal whirlwind of emotions when her ancestors seek her out and ask her to embark on a distant mission, while her family, her younger sister, and her community ask her to stay at home. The themes of inner growth, of how far someone can go, how much someone can strive despite and because of these factors, are central to the story”, explains actress and singer Auli’i Cravalho, who voices the character in the version. original, when expressing how moved and excited she was to have the opportunity to bring this iconic character to life again.
Maui
A magic hook to transform into animals? An exuberant personality? An unmistakable mood? Maui ticks all the boxes. Disney’s most beloved demigod is back in “Moana 2” and will undoubtedly win over his fans once again with his characteristic charisma.
When Moana enlists Maui to take part in her new mission, he accepts without hesitation. “There is no way to tell the story of Moana without Maui. We loved bringing the two characters together, because together they become better. Maui is changed, more mature, but it remains the Maui we all love. It takes Maui’s strength and courage, capable of catching the sun and raising an island, along with Moana’s altruism and empathy to unite the people of the ocean”, says David G. Derrick Jr.director of the film, noting that the characters now have a stronger relationship, marked by mutual respect.
Once again, the actor Dwayne Johnson lends his voice in the original version to the iconic character, giving him a unique brand. In this sense, the head of animation Kevin Webb says: “We managed to strike a balance with Maui, who can be very rude when talking to Moana. And Dwayne Johnson is able to say these words with a wink and a smile, softening them, creating a moment that is more comical than cruel, which represents Maui very well.”
The chief Tui, Sina and Simea
Chief Tui and Sina, Moana’s father and mother respectively, share leadership of Motunui with their daughter. Now, their new challenge is to support the protagonist on a journey that goes beyond what they could imagine. In the case of Chief Tui, the new story makes him calmer and less strict with his daughter. Sina, in turn, dedicates much of her energy to raising Simea, being determined to make her a woman as strong as herself and Moana.
Simea, in turn, is Moana’s younger sister. Full of energy, sweet and mischievous, she deeply admires the protagonist and misses her every time she goes out to sea. “Moana’s world changed when she became a big sister. Now, your look is different. They have a very beautiful relationship; It’s difficult for Moana to leave her little sister who idolizes her so much. But Moana also considers the future it wants to leave for Simea”, observes the co-director and screenwriter Dana Ledoux Miller.
When it comes to her look, with her little teeth and messy hair, Simea’s character is one of the most irresistible additions to the new film. And her movements suit her perfectly. “What I wanted to capture with Simea was an authenticity of this phase of life. When she moves, she moves chaotically, like a Tasmanian devil. Danny Arriagaart director of “Moana 2”, guarantees that the visual style of the first film left a strong mark on the new story and set the tone to be followed by the new team members. “It’s a world we already know and love. We imagine that the new characters have always been part of this world, we just haven’t had the chance to meet them until now”, he says.
Kele
The new crew has the invaluable presence of Kele, a grumpy, sour and bad-tempered old farmer with an essential skill for any mission: he has a vast knowledge of plants and agricultural products. Second Ledoux Millerthe character pays homage to the real-life farmers who were part of the region’s ancient sea voyages. “They didn’t know how long they would be away from home. In a very beautiful way, Kele represents how Pacific Islanders found new places and made them livable,” he says.
Lotus
Resourceful, agitated and extremely intelligent, she is the crew’s official engineer. Loto solves problems with cunning and efficiency, always based on science.
Moni
What would the Moana crew be without Moni’s wisdom and historical knowledge? This navigator is observant, has a good memory and is curious… and has an absolute devotion to Maui.
Kotu
He is a great, fearless and effective warrior who joins Moana’s crew, marking the Kakamora’s return to history. Carlos Cabralvisual effects supervisor, says: “We really wanted to bring back the original characters and preserve as much of the first film as possible. Technology and computer graphics are advancing very quickly and the Kakamora were the most complex challenge of all. Their vessel is incredibly complicated, and the Kakamora were not created as part of a larger system. We had to modify a lot of the machinery underneath to get it working and back to life. And then, we take them to the next level.”
