Will Dorothy be in the second part of ‘Wicked’? Director responds

“Wicked”, a plot that precedes the events presented in “The Wizard of Oz”, was divided into two parts, and the question that remains is: will Dorothy be in the second installment of the story? About this, the director of the films, Jon M. Chu hinted that there will be a possible participation of the character.

In an interview with Variety magazine (via Omelete), he stated:

“In the play, Dorothy is nearby. They [a peça e os livros] intersect, and you can only anticipate that to a certain extent,” the filmmaker said in the conversation. “I’m not going to say whether or not she is a character, necessarily, in the second film. There’s a part of me that wants everyone’s Dorothy to be whatever Dorothy they want her to be. And yet, there’s this interaction and a little bit of crossover. So I’ll leave that for Part Two.”

It is worth remembering that Dorothy is presented in “The Wizard of Oz” (1900), by the author L. Frank Baumtitle adapted for cinema in 1949, where the character was played by the actress Judy Garland. In the plot, she is taken to the land of Oz after a hurricane, and willing to return home, she seeks out the local ruler, who agrees to help her and the friends she makes along the way on one condition: that they bring the house’s broom. Wicked Witch of the West.

This witch, as well as the Good Witch of the North and the Wicked Witch of the West who crosses Dorothy’s path at other times in the story, have their origins revealed in “Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz”, written by Gregory Maguire in 1995, where they are presented as Glinda and Elphaba, respectively, whose friendship they took so long to build and the way they are seen changed after a visit to the Wizard of Oz.

In the current adaptation, the witches are played by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. The second part of “Wicked” premieres on December 27, 2025.
