During the war, not only Ukrainian but seven foreign media workers died, telling the world about the events in Ukraine.
In the two years and nine months since the massive offensive began, Russia has committed 762 crimes against journalists and media in Ukraine. This is confirmed by data from the Monitoring of Russian crimes against journalists and media conducted by the Institute of Mass Information.
To the total number of crimes this month, IMI added data on Ukrainian media closed as a result of the Russian invasion – 329. Of this number, only 52 media were able to continue their activities.

In October-November 2024, IMI recorded five crimes in Russia against media and journalists in Ukraine.
In October, it became known about the death in front of a television cameraman from Mariupol, serviceman Alexei Andreev. He was considered missing since November 29, 2023 in the village of Bogdanovka, Bakhmut district, Donetsk region.
The Russians used drones to destroy a television tower in Lozovaya, Kharkov region, as a result of which national broadcasting was interrupted.
Otkryty media holding has stopped broadcasting on Dnepr. The owners of the channel decided to stop the channel’s activities until Ukraine’s victory in the war.
A Russian court has arrested Mircea Barbu, a journalist for the Romanian publication HotNews, in absentia.
In addition, two media outlets were subject to cyber attacks – Media Detector and the Zaporozhye website inform.zp.ua. A Russian hacker group has claimed responsibility for the attack on Media Detector. The Zaporozhye editorial office links the attack to the Russian Federation, as it writes about the crimes of the Russian army in the temporarily occupied territories of the Zaporozhye region.
We remind you that since the beginning of a large-scale war on the territory of Ukraine, 132 artists and 93 media workers have died from the Russian aggression. The Ministry of Culture said that “the systematic crimes against journalists and media committed by Russia pose a serious threat to freedom of speech and information security, and undermine democratic values and human rights.”
Since 2014, at least 112 journalists are in Russian captivity.
