Anthony Mackie talks about how and when he discovered he would play Steve Rogers, Captain America, a character previously played by Chris Evans
Starring in the new First Avenger film, “Captain America: Brave New World”, Anthony Mackie revealed when participating in the Disney APAC Showcase 2024 in Singapore (Via Deadline), how he knew he would play the iconic North American hero.
Mackie said that on the day he was watching a football match with Chris Evans and he gave him the last two pages of the “Avengers: Endgame” script, resulting in a cute reaction from both of them when he discovered that he would take on the hero’s mantle.
He said:
“When I read it, we just hugged and jumped in circles.”
Debuting as the character in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”, Anthony also told how Sam Wilson will adapt to the new responsibility of protecting a nation:
“Sam’s evolution is simple. He’s still a counselor. He’s still serving soldiers, but at the same time, he’s now a leader for his community across the country.”
The actor was also asked about the Super Soldier Serum, and said that it sets him apart as Captain America, as Sam will need to use his intelligence and be creative to defeat his enemies.
“It’s very different with the serum – you can fight anyone. When you don’t have the serum, you have to be smart and come up with different ways to defeat [inimigos]. With Sam, him being a counselor, he uses more of his brain than brawn. He uses more of his intelligence than his fist. He’s the friendliest of all.”
Another point highlighted by Anthony It was the unique feature of the Captain America films that they were completely “realistic”, unlike most universes within Marvel.
“If you look at these Marvel movies, they combine different genres,” Mackie said. “You have the fantasy world, you have the space world, you have the raccoon world. With the Captain America stories, it’s always been the grounded, realistic world. This movie stays in line with the original Captain America, of that emotion, of that espionage, that grounded nature with the narrative and really investing the real audience in the story.”
“Captain America 4: Brave New World” premieres on February 14, 2025.
