On this Black Awareness Day, check out 5 animated films in which the main roles are played by black characters
During the month of November, racial issues gain even more strength, after all, since it was created in 1971, Black Awareness Day, celebrated this Wednesday, 20th, aims to bring visibility to black culture and the anti-racist struggle, extending matters beyond the date.
One way to celebrate the day with children, celebrated for the first time as a national holiday this year, is by watching animated productions where the main characters are black, after all, contact with customs, traditions, knowledge and battles of the black population in a more playful way it can strengthen identification processes through representation, in addition to including racial themes in the daily lives of non-black children.
With this in mind, RECREIO put together a list of 5 animated films with black protagonists, which can, of course, be watched not only today, but also at any time of the year.
1. The Princess and the Frog
Adaptation of the children’s story ‘The Frog Princess’ (2002), book written by ED Baker and inspired by the brothers’ fairy tale Grimm titled ‘The Frog Prince’, the animation “The Princess and the Frog”, was released by Disney in 2019, to present Tiana, a girl who has always worked hard to open the restaurant that her family always dreamed of having, but who lives a real twist when trying to help a prince turned into a frog.

2. Soul

Released in 2020, “Soul” follows music teacher Joe Gardner, who ends up discovering the true purpose of his existence when he accidentally ends up in pre-life, the place where souls gain personality before gaining a place on Earth.

3. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

The first black Spider-Man, Miles Morales, ends up discovering in “Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse” (2018) that he is not the only hero with the powers of a spider in the multiverse, which makes him embark on a journey that passes through different dimensions which won a sequel in “Spider-Man through the Aranhaverse” (2023) and has another title in progress, “Spider-Man: Beyond the Aranhaverse”, which should debut in 2027.

4. Wendell & Wild
For those who like more terrifying plots, “Wendell & Wild” mixes elements of horror with comedy to follow two demons who make a deal with a teenage punk rock fan to go from the underworld to Earth. Launched in 2020, the stop-motion plot is directed by Henry Selick (Coraline and the Secret World) from a script co-written by Selick and Jordan Peele(Run).

5. Everyone in their own home

2015 film, “Cada Um Na Sua Casa” follows Tip, a girl who becomes an accomplice of an exiled ET when aliens invade Earth.
