It is a golden cage. it soothes as much as it restrains. Do we necessarily have to escape from it to find fulfillment? And if so, how? The answers are in the first episode of the new podcast season Emotions.
“Is it over? You’re finally stepping out of your comfort zone?” That’s the tantalizing gossip journalist and podcaster Marie Missett has received from those close to her as she prepares to pick up the torch for Season 6.Emotions Louie Media podcast exploring our influences. It was enough for the established phrase to give him an idea of the subject, someone who has enjoyed this soft, familiar and soothing perimeter that is the comfort zone for more than 10 years, he says. To leave it is to put yourself at risk to realize yourself, to grow yourself, to always do more, he criticizes from the outset. But in this first episode, which aired this Monday, November 4, his theory is rocked in a good way. He hands his microphone over to other comfort zone subscribers who have managed to step outside their cocoon. And what emerges from their testimonies is a beautiful demonstration of the possible.
Overcome fear
How do you take the first step to get out of the zone? For Loan, it all started with an awareness of the environment in which he grew up. This one wasn’t as safe as he thought. This young disabled trans man grew up in a very conservative environment, which prevented him from questioning his identity for a long time. “Either I followed the life I was told to live or nothing,” recalls the man who eventually decided to break free from family ties.
But not only our relatives want to put obstacles in our way. Our greatest enemy that must be defeated is also ourselves and our insecurities. Singer Noyember Ultra, who suffers from chronic anxiety, testifies at length on the microphoneEmotions. For a long time and even today, the artist was afraid to go on vacation in an unfamiliar place, even eating something different could scare her, she says. “When the comfort zone is a prison from which we are afraid to escape, it seems to me that it is not really a comfortable place for us,” comments journalist Marie Missett. And this is exactly why November Ultra decided to escape slowly, expressing her fears literally on Instagram and using her passion for music as a springboard.
The praise of curiosity
As the author of the podcast reminds, getting out of the comfort zone does not require painful effort. As such, he suggests “expanding” your comfort zone rather than moving away from it at all costs. And if we don’t have passion for motoring, we still have curiosity. This is the idea that philosopher Gabriel Halpern develops in his book All centaurs, praise of hybridization (Le Pommier publications). “Curiosity is the mother of all values because it leads to all others,” he explains in the podcast. When we are curious, we empathize, we also question, question ourselves. “It is the greatest value we can pass on to our children, a teacher to his students, a business leader to his employees.”
And if there’s one person who sums up this mindset, it’s singer Philippe Caterin, who was also interviewed by Marie Misette. The 55-year-old man assures that “it would be a shame to miss this delicious feeling, which is discomfort.” And when we learn that the artist, who usually describes himself as “shy”, recently revealed his makeup-free nude during the official ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris, then: France Inter we, in turn, would almost be convinced by listening to it to accept the challenge and introduce a little anxiety into our daily lives.
