The short film arrived in the Disney+ catalog on February 2nd, enchanting viewers with the stop motion technique; find out which one it is!
You’ve probably already watched “The Nightmare Before Christmas” or “Coraline and the Secret World”. In addition to the scary scenes, the two animations also have one characteristic in common: both were recorded using a technique called “Stop Motion”, which consists of taking several photos of inanimate objects and placing them in sequence to create the illusion of movement.
Many may not know, but Pixar also has an animation in this format, which was released earlier this year…
Pixar’s first stop motion animation
The short film “Self” or “Eu Mesma” in Portuguese, arrived on Disney+ on February 2nd, telling the story of a wooden doll who desperately wants to fit into the human world. To do so, she makes a mistaken wish on a star, beginning a journey of self-discovery.
“Self” is also part of the SparkShorts program, which aims to explore the creativity of studio employees who wish to share their independent work, using Pixar’s structure to do so; Check out the Making Of of the production below!
More about the SparkShorts project
The first Pixar short film to be part of the innovative SparkShorts project was ‘Purl’, directed and scripted by the animator Kristen Lester. The story follows a pink knitting ball who has just been hired by an all-male company. Between the lines, the plot discusses the toxic masculinity present in work environments and in everyday life, in addition to also questioning the stereotypes we build around genders.
In a brief interview behind the scenes of the short, kristen mentions that the story was inspired by his own experience in the corporate world of the animation market:
At my first job, I was the only woman in the office. To be able to do what I loved, I ended up becoming one of those guys. And then I arrived at Pixar and started working on teams with women for the first time, which made me reflect on how much my feminine aspect had been buried and left behind.”
