In a video published on his Instagram account, Osean Sorel, a virologist specializing in infectious diseases, provides guidance on the proper use and washing of kitchen towels, real nests of microorganisms.
As for household hygiene, precise rules must be followed, and even more so in the kitchen. The room actually has many “permanently or intermittently wet zones”, as the National Agency for Health Security (ANSES) calls them in a practical sheet on the subject, and these zones promote the growth of micro-organisms. Among them? Tea towels. In a video posted on his Instagram on October 25, virologist Osean Sorel, known online as “thefrenchvirologist”, shares some ANSES tips and provides guidance on the correct use and washing of fabrics. Purposeful? Avoid spreading bacteria and germs around the room and getting sick.
Refresh your tea towels every other day
It is common to use the same cloth after washing to dry your dishes, work surface or even your hands. Wrong, according to Océane Sorel. The latter, on the contrary, recommends having one dedicated exclusively to drying hands.
ANSES notes: it’s best to let your dishes or work surface air dry to avoid bacteria growth. But if we don’t, the virologist reminds us of the importance of drying surfaces with a clean cloth taken from the closet.
Specifically, when do we consider the cloth dirty? Fast, says the expert, who recommends changing them every two days and putting them in the car at a minimum of 60°. In a previous article about the frequency of washing bath towels, infectious disease doctor Stephan Guy explained to us: “Most bacteria are removed by diluting the vehicle with water or killing the microorganisms.” And we were told that the fungicidal action (which aims to kill the fungus) was only effective at 90 degrees.
