The monarch reassured her supporters during her speech at a reception in London on October 2. The event was dedicated to the Diaspora of the Commonwealth, which was held at St. James’s Palace.
Since announcing his cancer at the start of the year, King Charles III has been able to count on the unwavering support of his wife Camilla and son Prince William. Although the monarch delegates most of her duties, often allowing her close friends to introduce her during royal outings and other official functions, she made it a point to attend the important reception on Tuesday, October 2. This event dedicated to the Commonwealth diaspora took place in St. James’s Palace in the center of London.
Seemingly happy, even euphoric, Charles III reassured fans of the monarchy. Accompanied by Queen Camilla, the 75-year-old sovereign looked in fine form as she tried out a few dance moves and displayed some easy-going humour. He even took part in a traditional Samoan dance, inspired by Polynesian rugby legend Freddie Tuilagi’s fever. Jamaican singer and model Grace Jones was among the other guests of this memorable evening.
“I’m not that bad”
This event, which was intended to strengthen ties with the Commonwealth of Nations, allowed the king to be optimistic despite his illness. Although the exact nature of her cancer has not been revealed, it seems that she is not yet cured. Following a reassuring press release from Buckingham Palace, a source told the British website Radar online “The palace suggests that Charles is on the mend, but in reality he is still very ill.” While meeting the families of the victims of a knife attack in Southport on August 20, a woman asked him about his health and was only told, “I’m not that bad.”
Despite persistent doubts, Charles III nevertheless continued to honor his royal obligations and remain hopeful. He is expected to attend a Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Australia and Samoa from October 18 to 26, marking his first major trip since being crowned in May 2023 and announcing his cancer diagnosis in February 2024.
