5 interesting facts about ‘Iron Man’

Discover some curious facts about the film that opened the MCU and will be shown in today’s Afternoon Session, 09: ‘Iron Man’!

This Wednesday, 9th, ‘Iron Man’ will be shown in the Afternoon Session, where it will be possible to follow the story of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), a brilliant — and very rich — inventor who is kidnapped by terrorists with one objective: to make him build a powerful weapon with a high destructive capacity. Instead, Stark assembles a high-tech armored suit, which he uses to leave the place and, in the future, to fight crime.

Remember the trailer:

The plot was launched in 2008, opening the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse (MCU), from which more than 30 films whose stories are connected came out. Thinking about the importance of the film, RECREIO put together a list of 5 interesting facts about the behind-the-scenes of the production to discover before watching the screening at 3:25 pm (Brasília time) on TV Globo.

1. Planned for a long time

As reported by the Legion of Heroes portal, it took years of planning before the plot got off the ground. It turns out that the production has the first records since 1990!

At the time, studios such as Universal, New Line and Fox were mentioned to guide the project, but none actually went ahead with production, as Marvel returned to owning the rights to the plot in 2004, deciding to produce the feature film on its own.

2. Another director?

Years of planning took shape when the director chosen to direct the plot, Jon Favreauwho also plays Happy Hogan, Tony Stark’s driver/bodyguard, was cast. Even so, before him, who took over the ship in 2006, other filmmakers were considered to direct the story, such as Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction), which, according to Rede Globo, was approached in 1999 not only to direct, but also to write the story.

After him, in 2001, Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), a big comic book fan, was in talks to head the production, followed by Nick Cassavetes (Diary of a Passion), in 2004.

3. Risky Escalation

In addition to Robert Downey Jr.other actors were considered for the role, such as Nicolas Cage (Longlegs) and Tom Cruise (Top Gun: Maverick). When Robert was cast, many doubts swirled in the media about him being the right choice for the role, given that the star, who already had an Oscar for “Chaplin” in 1993, was dealing with drug addiction and successive arrests, making his career in the cinema was somewhat uncertain.

However, Downey Jr. he took a turn after the role, becoming the highest paid actor in the MCU and returning to big projects in Hollywood, since, after the 2008 plot, he starred in films such as “Sherlock Holmes” and “Oppenheimer”, for example.

4. A lot of improvisation

Have you ever thought about filming a plot starting without the script completely ready? That’s what happened in “Iron Man”! Due to the lack of a finished script, the actors improvised several dialogues, which in a way brought more fluidity and dynamism to the scenes.

5. Adaptation

Jarvis, the artificial intelligence that takes care of Tony Stark’s armor and establishments, is very different in the comics. This is because, in the comics, Jarvis is the name of Stark’s butler, while in the film adaptation this fact was changed to avoid comparisons with Alfred Pennyworth, Batman’s butler.

Another curiosity is that Paul Bettanywho is best known in the MCU for giving life to Vision, Scarlet Witch’s love interest, was the one who voiced Jarvis. It took him just two hours to dub all of Jarvis’ lines in the film.
