Marvel Comics, one of the largest comic book publishers in the world, recently celebrated its 85th anniversary; find out how it all began!
Last Saturday, August 31st, Marvel Comics, one of the largest comic book publishers in the world, celebrated its 85th anniversary. With a legion of fans spread across several countries and nations, Marvel has remained strong in the comic book market since 1939, the year in which “Marvel Comics #1” was published.
Contrary to what many people think, the publisher’s first superhero was not Iron Man or Captain America, but rather the Human Torch, who is currently part of the Fantastic Four, and Namor, the Sub-Mariner, known through the actor’s face. Tenoch Huerta in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”.
The story of Steve Rogers would only be released two years after the inauguration of Marvel Comics, a hero who was the fruit of the minds of the designers Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. Still in 1941, after both migrated to DC Comics, Marvel’s main competitor, another employee of the publisher began to produce Captain America’s stories, being none other than Stanley Martin Lieberbetter known as Stan Lee.
Between the 40s and 50s, the publisher began to bring more diverse narratives, which also presented new genres, such as horror, science fiction, and even romance, most of them written by Stan Lee in the post-World War II era. Superheroes only became popular again at the turn of the 1960s, which led Marvel to create the Fantastic Four to compete with the Justice League under the title “The Fantastic Four #1”.
Since then, Marvel Comics has become one of the biggest names in pop culture, making history not only on the pages, but also on movie screens, TV and streaming through adapted plots. Check out this and other details in the video below!
