Watch Matthew Lillard and Linda Cardellini’s exclusive interview about the film

Matthew Lillard and Linda Cardellin, who played Shaggy and Velma in “Scooby-Doo” (2002), spoke to RECREIO in issue 1137 of the printed magazine

Would you go into a park full of monsters, mummies and ghosts alone? Neither you nor
Nobody! To face a mission like this, only the Mystery Inc. gang, a group of clumsy detectives who have a very special agent: Scooby-Doo, the title character of the live-action released in 2002 starring Sarah Michelle Gellar (Daphne Blake), Matthew Lillard (Shaggy ‘Shaggy’ Rogers), Freddie Prinze Jr. (Fred Jones) and Linda Cardellini (Velma Dinkley).

The film that brings the gang together to investigate strange events in a haunted park called Spook Island completed 12 years since its release this year, and in celebration of the achievement, RECREIO recovered an exclusive interview given by Lillard and Cardellini for issue 1137 of the print magazine, where the duo talked about “Scooby-Doo” and its characters.

Remember how the chat went!

RECREATION: Did you feel scared during the movie?

Matthew Lillard: No, I had a lot of fun. I thought it was just a movie and I was able to live with the ghosts and mummies just fine.

RECREATION: Why does everyone love Shaggy and Scooby?

Matthew Lillard: I think people, especially children, identify with them because when they are scared they react like normal people: they run away and scream. Plus, they are a lot of fun.

RECREATION: Who is more scared, Shaggy or Scooby?

Matthew Lillard: Scooby, for sure. I think they’re the most fearful duo ever. When danger appears, they both run at the same time.

RECREATION: Do you think we like to feel afraid?

Matthew Lillard: It’s not exactly like that, but fear tickles our stomachs. And after it passes, it leaves a pleasant feeling of relief. That’s why everyone likes roller coasters, horror movies and things like that.

RECREATION: What did you like most about this movie?

Linda Cardellini: I loved the fun atmosphere during filming. Plus, the sets, effects, and monsters were so well done that sometimes I was actually scared. It was also fun to do the scenes with the virtual Scooby. We imagined he was somewhere, saying something. We had a lot of laughs.

RECREATION: Were you scared as a child?

Linda Cardellini: I was afraid of everything, especially sleeping alone. I thought there was something in the room, I saw shadows. I always slept with a light on.

RECREATION: Is Velma not afraid of anything?

Linda Cardellini: She is afraid, yes, but she always thinks that there is an explanation behind everything and that is how she manages to have courage. She is very intelligent, clever and independent. She doesn’t let fear take over and always has a good plan to unravel the mysteries.

RECREATION: What is your tip for overcoming fear?

Linda Cardellini: We have to remember that it is often our imagination that creates things. Monsters exist more in our heads. In the Scooby series, for example, the ghosts are never real. Thinking like this, the fear goes away.
