Discover some songs that, despite being big K-pop hits, were not very appreciated by some of their performers
In the music industry, it is common for singers to end up not liking some of their own songs very much, or simply to become bored of certain songs. This can happen, especially when, for contractual reasons, the artist needs to release a track that ended up not being very relatable the first time they heard it.
However, sometimes fate can play tricks and, even if the singer is not the biggest fan of the song, it can end up becoming a big hit — something that has happened countless times within K-pop.
With that in mind, RECREIO has selected five songs by girl groups that were not very popular with their members, but became huge hits. Check them out!
1. Teddy Bear — STAYC
Released in 2023 by STAYC, “Teddy Bear” became one of the biggest hits of the year. The track was produced by Radoa producer recognized in South Korea for, alongside his duo, Choi Kyu-sungbeing the names behind hits such as SISTAR’s “Touch My Body” as well as TWICE’s “Fancy”, “Likey” and “Cheer Up”.
In an interview with Knowing Bros., the group members revealed that, for the first time, they were worried about the song because they thought it would be “too cute” and, possibly, might not be very well accepted by the public who would have gotten used to seeing the group in slightly more mature concepts, such as the track “Beautiful Monster”.
2. Bad Girl, Good Girl — miss A
Despite being miss A’s debut song, the group’s members didn’t like “Bad Girl, Good Girl” at all from the beginning, as stated by the producer and founder of JYP Entertainment himself, Park Jinyoungalso known simply as JY Park or JYP (via Koreaboo).
Despite the artists’ reluctance, it is said that JYP ignored their opinions because he believed that, since they were just starting out, they should not “have a say.” However, the chaotic backstage ended up having a turnaround, as the track became the fastest to win a single right after its debut, in addition to being elected song of the year at the awards.
3. BBom BBom — MOMOLAND
“BBom BBom” is, without a doubt, one of the biggest hits ever released by MOMOLAND. In addition to being an international hit to this day, the song also became a hit in South Korea, topping the music charts and earning a platinum certification.
However, one day, JooE revealed that when the members first heard it, they all went silent, and she and Nancy were the only ones who had the courage to reveal that they didn’t like the track. According to the artist, the two even confronted the head of MLD Entertainment, the company responsible for the set, where they cried saying “We can’t do this!”.
4. Tell Me — Wonder Girls
Today, “Tell Me” can be considered a must-listen for all K-pop fans, and it continues to be extremely loved by fans both inside and outside of Korea. The song was also produced by JY Parkin addition to having touches from the businessman in the choreography, presenting a retro concept.
Years after the track’s release, Sunmi came to reveal to JYP who hated promoting the song precisely because she didn’t like the concept and found it old-fashioned, since she didn’t live in that era. In addition, the idol also commented that, when the members watched the demo choreography made by him, they were all in disbelief.
5. Gee — Girls’ Generation
Released in 2009, “Gee” can be considered a turning point in Girls’ Generation’s career, further boosting their career, in addition to becoming one of the biggest hits ever released in k-pop.
However, Taeyeonthe leader of the group, has already revealed that she hated the song from the beginning — and even cried because of it, according to Yuri. Despite not being the biggest fan at first, eventually, her idea ended up changing and, in 2021, the artist admitted that, at that time, she would have liked to carry out a more “fierce” concept, however, the one for “Gee” ended up being perfect for the age of the members at the time, who were around 20 years old.
