“Taking the best of French culture and American culture.” Emily’s Makeup Secrets in Paris Season 4

Lily Collins trusted him with her face from the beginning of the filming of the Netflix series. Aurélie Payen, head of makeupEmily in Paris reveals all the beauty secrets of the actresses in the new season.

There are changes in season fourEmily in Paris . “I decided to bring more makeup to the screen,” says Oreli Payne, head of makeup for the Netflix series since its inception. “The idea was to take the best of French and American cultures and fuse them together. From the French style, I kept this trend towards naturalness and minimalism. For example, the iconic red mouth with a black pencil and mascara line. Or just lipstick and nothing else. On the American side, the complexion is much more elaborate with contouring products and highlighters, the brows are well-defined and the eyes are defined, the lips are lacquered with gloss. The goal was to inject a bit of each into the beauty treatment. This is what I’ve been doing for years, because I work a lot with Americans, keeping my French experience, and that’s what he says.”

A balance between bold and natural

A state of mind that particularly resonates with the evolution of the main character, Emily Cooper, played by Lily Collins. “He’s keeping this American base that he had when he arrived in France, but giving himfrench touch“She really embraces the culture and sense of aesthetics of Parisian women, but at the same time she can also be bold and confident, wearing strong and very colorful looks that we would prefer to see in the United States,” Aurelie continues. Payen:

It seems appearance of beauty The most memorable of the fourth season, which was also the most synonymous with challenges for her, the specialist mentions, in particular, episode 4, where Emily styled her hair. wet hair and makeup as intense on the lips as on the eyes. Or even this scene at the masquerade ball where she tries on black rhinestones under each eye.

Consider the “no makeup” look

The contrast between these emphasis and the return to naturalness will become even stronger in the second part of Season 4. “Emily is going on holiday, so the atmosphere will be more relaxed and the make-up will be completely toned down to ‘almost non-existent in certain scenes,'” she reveals.

An intention that the main actress did not like. “Lily Collins really wants to show her skin as it is, as much as possible. And it’s also important in my philosophy that we can show young girls and women that they don’t have to wear makeup to hide their flaws, but that they can use it for sublimation. That’s why there’s a lot of make-up this season, but also the no-makeup look, and we’re totally embracing it,” says the expert, who has been exclusively doing makeup for Phil Collins’ daughter and even Darren Starr for several years now. directed the show.

Sylvie, an ode to Parisian beauty

There is one character whose naturalness has been sublimated more than ever this season: that of Sylvie Grateau, played by the Filipino Leroy-Beaulieu, or the embodiment of Parisians. “She’s a character who is confident and doesn’t need to be overwhelmed when it comes to makeup. We stick to small tweaks to keep this skin as natural in spirit as possible working girl I’m from Paris,” describes the head make-up artist. “The complexion is lighter, just embellished with very subtle elements, such as a tinted cheek and lip balm, a concealer for signs of fatigue or highlighting certain areas we want to highlight.” According to him, “the mistake not to make on mature skin would be to apply the cream with a thick layer, which will give the effect of a mask and the skin will lose all its freshness and density.”

On the other hand, one area of the face that can be enhanced is “the eyes by applying lots of mascara to create a full lash line and accenting the look with a thick or gradient oil pencil.”

A pro tip for touch-ups throughout the day without losing shine is to “spritz a little healing mist on your face. This makes it easy to renew and refresh the complexion. Then, with your fingertips, touch the concealer, which passes, for example, into the hollows of wrinkles,” advises the make-up artist. Or in case of excessive sebum, use “buffing papers, very useful when the skin is shiny in the T zone”.

Less skin care

It’s not all about the makeup phase. Before handling the brushes, following a careful skin-care regimen is essential to creating the best impression on camera, says Aurélie Payen, who encouraged actors and actresses to adopt a few important beauty gestures. “It’s very important because we work on their epidermis for several months. My goal was to keep Lily’s skin beautiful and fresh, so that it would be easier for me to apply makeup on her face, so that the result would be more beautiful and last for several hours,” she explains. “We also have to take into account the fatigue of the actors, so I offer them care rituals that allow them to always keep their skin; shiny and in top form.”

During the shoot, he suggested the artists use products that he tested and approved to achieve long-lasting effects. At the top of the list are beauty items from the Swedish brand Foreo, such as a facial cleansing brush, a microcurrent booster, an LED mask or even a contouring massager. “It allowed them to have healthy skin for four months, filming every day. The main cast loved it and adopted some of them into their routine. Lily says she still uses them today. She has a lot of confidence in me and my vision of beauty in general. As soon as I offer him new products, he is always very receptive,” she confides.

As for makeup, she mainly requested Diorshow mascara, Chanel’s No and Lisa Eldridge.
