It’s not Lisa: see what the BLACKPINK maknae’s birth name is, which was changed thanks to a cultural practice in Thailand
In the world of celebrities, it is extremely common for artists to end up adopting different names to be recognized in their careers, a practice used by celebrities all over the world. In Brazil, for example, the singer Anittain fact, is called Larissawhile in the United States, Lana Del Rey and Elizabeth Woolridge Grant.
Within k-pop this is no different, and many idols use the famous “stage names”, or artistic names in Portuguese, such as Minniefrom (G)I-DLE, which is Nicha Yontararakor Cha Eunwoofrom ASTRO, which is called Lee Dongmin.
Likewise, there are also many K-pop singers who ended up changing their birth name permanently, for different reasons — as is the case with Lisathe maknae of BLACKPINK.
Other name
If you are new to the BLINK fandom, you have probably already guessed that Lisa was the artist’s real name, when that is just her stage name. The way the idol is officially registered today is Lalisa Manobalwhich means “the one who is praised”.
However, at birth, the singer, who came into the world on March 27, 1997 in Thailand, was given the name Pranpriya Manobalwhich means “beloved soul.” In an interview with Billboard in 2021, the star revealed that she changed her name at age 13, thanks to the advice of a fortune teller, to bring her luck — a very common practice in Thai culture.
“We auditioned for YG, but YG didn’t contact us back. We [eu e minha mãe] “We really wanted to get it. Then the fortune teller said, ‘You should change your name,’” Lisa explained. “The week after I changed my name, YG called me back and said, ‘You should come[be a trainee].’ I was like, ‘Wow!’”
Lisa arrived in South Korea in 2011, without knowing the language, but making history. This is because she was the only one to be accepted among 4 thousand applicants, becoming the first foreigner to be accepted into YG Entertainment. There, in addition to taking dance, singing and rap lessons, she also took language classes, where she was always helped by Jisoo and Jenniewho were already in the company. Rosé arrived only the following year, at the age of 14.
Today, BLACKPINK’s maknae is completely in love with her new name, so much so that she used it to name her solo debut single-album. Still in the interview with Billboard, Lisa commented that he was very happy to put his own name on the project, since many people don’t know that’s what it’s called.
“It’s really funny, a few weeks ago, one of the cameramen asked me, ‘What’s Lalisa?’ I was like, ‘That’s my name!’ People don’t really know that Lalisa is my real name because they just know me as Lisa from BLACKPINK. So I’m really happy to be able to do this project under the title Lalisa,” she said.
