“Gloss” before Suga
In the years before BTS debuted, Sucks wrote song lyrics in his hometown of Daegu, using the stage name “Gloss”. Initially, he would use the same name as a member of the boy group, but, Bang Si Hyukthe founder of Big Hit Entertainment (now BigHit Music), suggested that his stage name should be more impactful.
He later came up with the idea of ”Suga”, which excited the idol, as it contradicts his posture and appearance on stage, as well as the reference it makes to his position when he played basketball.
“Baby J” and “Baby G” before Jimin
During a BTS interview on The Tonight Show in 2021, hosted by Jimmy Fallon, Jimin said he almost debuted in the industry with the names “Baby J” and “Baby G”. However, he ended up changing his mind because he thought they both sounded too weird, deciding to use his real name in the end.
“Seagull”, “Tattoo” and “Ian” before Jungkook
In a 2019 episode of the JTBC show Knowing Bros, Jungkook commented that “Seagull,” “Tattoo,” and “Ian” were three stage names he had in mind before debuting with BTS. In fact, the name “Seagull” was a reference to the bird that is the symbol of Busan, his hometown.
