“What happened to the modesty of our young ladies?” Aussie moms are freaking out over Kmart micro-shorts for kids

A pair of high-rise denim shorts has been sold at Kmart Australia. It’s enough to infuriate a few mothers.

When the main issue causes a dispute. Recently, the Australian chain of Kmart stores came under fire after a post made by a mother on the Kmart Mums Australia Facebook group. The latter shared a photo of a pair of denim micro shorts sold at a Kmart store for $12, complete with the caption, “Damn Kmart, do better.” The photo shows a very low-cut dress with an adjustable waist for children.

According to the reported information New York Post on July 30, several mothers were upset and shared their opinions about said shorts. “I saw it and was a little surprised,” “My God, what happened to the modesty of our young girls?” Damn, where did the rest of the fabric go?” “I put it against my daughter for a laugh. Honestly, they could pass for underwear.” “What the hell happened to you all?” Another user said in the comments section.

A big problem

This simple photo then sparked a debate. Other members of the Facebook group believe that the shorts, when worn, are not as short as they appear in the photo. Furthermore, the length of the shorts on the Kmart shopping website appear to be much longer than in the photo shared by the Australian mom. Many people believe that you should trust the image on the website rather than the one posted in the Facebook group. “When they connect, they don’t seem as short as you might imagine. They are regular cut shorts,” commented one of them.

Whether very short or a length tailored to the body shape of a child up to 10 years old, these denim shorts bring up a different topic: girls’ bodies that need to be hidden more than boys’. Can little girls wear short clothes? At least that’s how we feel when we read the comments, like this mom who explains that she “buys most of her shorts in the boys section because the girls’ shorts are too small.”

The point of view is far from unanimous. “They are children, not adults. Yes, they’re short… they’re also short for a kid who walks around in a bathing suit on a hot day… I mean, at one year old, my kids spent most of their time in their underwear. These are SUMMER SHORTS,” other moms remember in distress. These simple shorts will ultimately divide moms into two categories: those who fear the clothing sexualizes the baby’s body, and those who believe that babies can wear shorts in the summer… just because they’re babies.
